A survey and refinement of repairable threshold schemes

Abstract: We consider repairable threshold schemes (RTSs), which are threshold schemes that enable a player to securely reconstruct a lost share with help from their peers. We summarise and, where possible, refine existing RTSs and introduce a new parameter for analysis, called the repair metric. We then explore using secure regenerating codes as RTSs and find them to be immediately applicable. We compare all RTS constructions considered and conclude by presenting the best candidate solutions for when either communicati… Show more

“…All of that said, Errx security does imply robustness whenever the latter can be achieved. Auth and Errx have little in common with repairable threshold schemes [25,32], which allow a party to reconstruct a missing share by interacting with fellow shareholders. In scenarios we care about, shareholders may not have the ability to interact with one another prior to recovery.…”

“…In this section we contrast these goals. Then we contrast Auth with robustness [15,31] and, finally, with repairability [25,32].…”

“…133 As many critics have noted, West is deliberately invoking 'Conradian resonances' here. 134 Just like Marlow in Heart of Darkness (1899), George locates darkness and 'the horror' not in the depths of Africa but in the imperial centre of London. Marlow confronts two women 'guarding the door of Darkness, knitting black wool as for a warm pall'; similarly, George recalls how he was introduced to Evadne by an elderly widow, Mrs Mary Ellerker, who sat 'in the black-panelled drawing-room amidst the jungle of shiny mahogany furniture' and in 'a mass of darkness': 'This horror obsessed him'.…”

“…Reconstruction is easily accomplished using the Lagrange interpolation formula (see, e.g., [7, §11.5.1]). The problem of share repairability has been considered by several authors in recent years (see Laing and Stinson [5] for a survey on this topic). The problem setting is that a certain player P ℓ (in a (τ, n)-threshold scheme, say) loses their share.…”
