Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks (VANETs) have attracted a lot of attention in the research community in recent years due to their promising applications. VANETs help improve traffic safety and efficiency. Each vehicle can exchange information to inform other vehicles about the current status of the traffic flow or a dangerous situation such as an accident. Road safety and traffic management applications require a reliable communication scheme with minimal transmission collisions, which thus increase the need for an efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. However, the design of the MAC in a vehicular network is a challenging task due to the high speed of the nodes, the frequent changes in topology, the lack of an infrastructure, and various QoS requirements. Recently several Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)-based medium access control protocols have been proposed for VANETs in an attempt to ensure that all the vehicles have enough time to send safety messages without collisions and to reduce the end-to-end delay and the packet loss ratio. In this paper, we identify the reasons for using the collision-free medium access control paradigm in VANETs. We then present a novel topology-based classification and we provide an overview of TDMA-based MAC protocols that have been proposed for VANETs. We focus on the characteristics of these protocols, as well as on their benefits and limitations. Finally, we give a qualitative comparison, and we discuss some open issues that need to be tackled in future studies in order to improve the performance of TDMA-based MAC protocols for vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communications.

Recent advances in wireless communication technologies and auto-mobile industry have triggered a significant research interest in the field of VANETs over the past few years. Vehicular Network consists of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications supported by wireless access technologies such as IEEE 802.11p. This innovation in wireless communication has been envisaged to improve road safety and motor traffic efficiency in near future through the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). Hence, government, auto-mobile industries and academia are heavily partnering through several ongoing research projects to establish standards for VANETs. The typical set of VANET application areas, such as vehicle collision warning and traffic information dissemination have made VANET an interesting field of mobile wireless communication. This paper provides an overview on current research state, challenges, potentials of VANETs as well the ways forward to achieving the long awaited ITS.Keywords: Vehicular communication, V2V, V2I, ITS, IEEE 802.11p, WAVE, IEEE 1609. IntroductionRoad accidents has been on an alarming increase despite the introduction of several innovative in-vehicle safety-oriented devices such as anti-locking braking system (ABS), seatbelts, airbags, rear-view cameras, electronic stability control (ESC). Several studies have maintained that 60% of the accidents that occur on motorways could be avoided if warning messages were provided to the drivers just few seconds prior to moment of crash [1] [2].The possibility of direct exchange of kinematic data between vehicles over an ad-hoc network environment called a vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) has been widely perceived by governments, car manufacturing industries and academia as a promising concept for future realization of intelligent transportation system (ITS) thereby achieving safety and efficiency in our nearly overcrowded motorways. The VANET is a sub-class of MANET where the mobile nodes are vehicles. When compared with Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) and other cellular systems, inter-vehicle communication (IVC) has four major advantages: broad coverage area, relatively low latency due to direct wireless communication, little or no power issue as well as no service fees.In the recent years, car manufacturing industries, academia and government agencies have started putting much joint efforts together towards realizing the concept of vehicular communications in wide scale. Some frameworks are already worked out with the first landmark of standardization processes made by US Federal Communications Communication (FCC) [15] adopted an amendment of the legacy IEEE wireless LAN standard done by an IEEE Task Group (TG). Vehicular Ad hoc Networks, known as VANETs, are deployed to decrease the probability of road accidents and to improve passenger comfort by allowing vehicles to exchange different kinds of data messages between the mobile vehicles and the installed infrastructure. VANETs facilitate improved traffic safety and efficiency. Each vehicle can exchange information to inform other vehicles about the current status of the traffic flow or a dangerous situation such as an accident. Moreover, traffic safety applications need a reliable communication scheme with minimal transmission collision, which leads to the need for an efficient and reliable MAC. Design MAC for VANETs is a complex task due to the high mobility of the nodes, the frequent changes in topology, the lack of an infrastructure, and various QoS requirements. In the past years, various Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) based medium access control protocols have been proposed for VANETs in an attempt to assure that all the vehicles have sufficient time to send safety messages with minimum collisions and to reduce the end-to-end delay and the packet loss ratio. In this survey paper a qualitative comparison provided in order to improve the performance of TDMA-based MAC protocols for V2V communication and also focused on the detailed characteristics of these protocols, their benefits and limitations. INTRODUCTIONVehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are emerging as a promising technology for providing safety and comfort applications for vehicular transportation. VANETs are receiving growing attention from the research community and from the transportation industry because of their great potential to improve traffic safety on roads. They can also be used to improve traffic management conditions and to provide on-board infotainment such as Internet access, video streaming, etc. VANETs are an example of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) but with their own specification: high node mobility with constrained movements and the mobile nodes have ample energy and computing power (i.e. Storage and processing) [1]. In VANETs, communications can either be between vehicles V2V (Vehicle To Vehicle) or between vehicles and roadside units V2I [2] (Vehicle to Infrastructure). The applications for V2V and V2I can be divided into the following three services: safety services, traffic management and useroriented services [3], [4]. Safety services have special requirements in terms of quality of service. In fact, bounded transmission delays as well as low access delays are mandatory in order to offer the highest possible level of safety. At the same time, useroriented services need a broad bandwidth. Medium Access Control will play an important role in satisfying these requirements.
