A supervised approach to electric tower detection and classification for power line inspection

Abstract: Inspection of power line infrastructures must be periodically conducted by electric companies in order to ensure reliable electric power distribution. Research efforts are focused on automating the power line inspection process by looking for strategies that satisfy the different requirements of the inspection: simultaneously detect transmission towers, check for defects, and analyze security distances. Following this direction, this paper proposes a supervised learning approach for solving the tower detection… Show more

“…The main process of digital image processing is divided into the following three steps: input image preprocessing, image feature extraction and image feature analysis [1]. The input image preprocessing plays an important role in image analysis process, and is the foundation for study on image information.…”

“…Primarily, a variety of classification and recognition algorithms were designed as the drone inspection is based on the images captured by the airborne camera [26][27][28][29][30]. The supervised learning approach and network training method were applied in the classification problem of inspection images [26,28]. The decomposition algorithm is used to distinguish the transmission line from the natural outdoor environment [27] or eliminate the influence of flog weather [30].…”

“…In the majority of countries, helicopters are used in this context, but they generally cannot stay too close to transmission lines for observation due to noise and disturbance issues [8]. The distance is commonly between 20 and 100 m, depending on the equipment used and at a height of about 10-15 m from the ground.…”
