A supertree of early tetrapods

Abstract: A genus-level supertree for early tetrapods is built using a matrix representation of 50 source trees. The analysis of all combined trees delivers a long-stemmed topology in which most taxonomic groups are assigned to the tetrapod stem. A second analysis, which excludes source trees superseded by more comprehensive studies, supports a deep phylogenetic split between lissamphibian and amniote total groups. Instances of spurious groups are rare in both analyses. The results of the pruned second analysis are most… Show more

“…(a) Input trees Temnospondyl phylogenies (see appendix 1a in the electronic supplementary material) were chosen according to several criteria (Ruta et al 2003;Bininda-Emonds et al 2004). First, current knowledge of the large-scale interrelationships of temnospondyls relies extensively on Milner's (1990) overarching family-level study, which was therefore selected as the starting point for our survey.…”

“…At node 2 (Eotetrapodiformes), the ventral process of the radius appeared, indicating separation of radial and ulnar/distal fin flexors. At node 3 (Elpistostegalia), the Ruta et al (2003) and Ruta (2011). See text for specific osteological correlates.…”

“…The phylogeny used for character mapping was based on Ruta, Jeffery & Coates (2003) and Ruta (2011) because their analysis was most complete in terms of taxon sampling. An alternative phylogeny based on Ahlberg et al (2008) was also tested, but this affected the results only slightly, as described below.…”

“…Stem-and crowngroup attributions differ in recent analyses of early tetrapod interrelationships. Here, we follow broadly the scheme of relationships in [22], with amendments and additions from [23][24][25][26]. Jaw orientation and descriptive terminology conform to [23,27].…”
