A summary of laser and microwave flow control in high-speed flows

Abstract: Laser and microwave discharge in air has emerged as an e¨ective method for §ow control in high-speed §ows. Computational and experimental research has demonstrated its capability for signi¦cant drag reduction and mitigation of adverse interactions in high-speed §ows. The paper presents a summary of key computational and experimental studies performed at Rutgers University in collaboration with the Joint Institute for High Temperatures (Moscow, Russia) and St. Petersburg State University (St. Petersburg, Russia… Show more

“…The three main modes of energy transfer from the electrons to the heavy particles kinetic energy (increasing kinetic energy increases gas temperature) are: (i) rotational excitation, (ii) excitation of the particles to higher electronic states, and (iii) electron-ion recombination. 123,103 The latter two modes are synonymous with Joule heating described in Section 2.2.…”

“…A number of reviews covering different aspects of this topic include an analysis of research from the end of the last century to the present. In the review papers [1][2][3], D. Knight et al consider the works on using energy deposition for aerodynamic applications. In [1], D. Knight and N. Kianvashrad review the recent developments in three areas: SparkJets, drag reduction, and flow control.…”

“…In [2,3], D. Knight presented surveys of research consisting of experiments and simulation of using microwave (MW) and laser discharges for supersonic flow control and aerodynamic drag reduction at high speeds. A classification of MW discharges, physical features of laser discharges, methods for producing MW and laser discharges, and the parameters of these discharges are analyzed.…”
