An up-to-date overview of the recent history is given, aiming is to present a helpful working guide to the literature and at the same time introduce key systems and observational results, starting from the Sun and going toward the Galactic Center and parts of the Zona Galactica Incognita, and beyond. We start by presenting an observational view of the Milky Way's disk plane (cartographic, dynamical, chemical crosscut, magnetic). This included the four long spiral arms in the disk of the Milky Way galaxy, their geometry, components, velocity, their widths and internal layers as well as onion-like ordered offsets, the central galactic bars, arm tangents, arm pitch and arm shape, arm origins near the Galactic Center, and other possible players in the spiral arm, such as the magnetic field and the dark matter content. After, we present a basic analysis of some theoretical predictions from galactic arm formation: numerical simulations or analytical theories, and observations are checked against predictions from various numerical simulations and analytical (theoretical) models.

We present a new theoretical population synthesis model (the Galaxy Model) to examine and deal with large amounts of data from surveys of the Milky Way and to decipher the present and past structure and history of our own Galaxy.We assume the Galaxy to consist of a superposition of many composite stellar populations belonging to the thin and thick disks, the stellar halo and the bulge, and to be surrounded by a single dark matter halo component. A global model for the Milky Way's gravitational potential is built up self-consistently with the density profiles from the Poisson equation. In turn, these density profiles are used to generate synthetic probability distribution functions (PDFs) for the distribution of stars in colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). Finally, the gravitational potential is used to constrain the stellar kinematics by means of the moment method on a (perturbed)-distribution function. Spiral arms perturb the axisymmetric disk distribution functions in the linear response framework of density-wave theory where we present an analytical formula of the so-called 'reduction factor' using Hypergeometric functions.Finally, we consider an analytical non-axisymmetric model of extinction and an algorithm based on the concept of probability distribution function to handle colour magnitude diagrams with a large number of stars. A genetic algorithm is presented to investigate both the photometric and kinematic parameter space.This galaxy model represents the natural framework to reconstruct the structure of the Milky Way from the heterogeneous data set of surveys such as Gaia-ESO, SEGUE, APOGEE2, RAVE and the Gaia mission.

Recent advances in the determination of some Galactic constants in the Milky Way

Abstract.Here we statistically evaluate recent advances in determining the SunGalactic Center distance (R sun ) as well as recent measures of the orbital velocity around the Galactic Center (V lsr ), and the angular rotation parameters of various objects. Recent statistical results point to R sun = 8.0 ± 0.2 kpc, V lsr = 230 ± 3 km/s, and angular rotation at the Sun (ω) near 29 ± 1 km/s/kpc for the gas and stars at the Local Standard of Rest, and near 23 ± 2 km/s/kpc for the spiral pattern itself.This angular difference is similar to what had been predicted by density wave models, along with the observation that the galactic longitude of each spiral arm tracer (dust, cold CO) for each spiral arm becomes reversed across the Galactic Meridian (Vallée 2016b). IntroductionThe value of the distance of the Sun to the Galactic Center, R sun , is one of the fundamental parameters of our Milky Way disk galaxy. Similarly, the value of the circular orbital velocity V lsr , for the Local Standard of Rest at radius R sun around the Galactic Center, is another fundamental parameter. In 1985, the IAU recommended the use of R sun =8.5 kpc and V lsr = 220 km/s. Recent measurements of R sun and V lsr deviate somewhat from this IAU recommendation.Section 2 makes a table of recent measurements of two galactic constants, namely the distance of the Sun to the Galactic Center, and the orbital circular velocity near the Sun around the Galactic Center. Section 3 deals with current angular rotation rates for various galactic features, while Section 4 concludes.
