Thermo-physiological properties of textiles are crucial in determining the heat and moisture transport from skin to environment and in the assessment of overall wearer comfort. Engineering fabrics with desirable thermo-physiological properties suited for specific applications such as active wear, intimate wear is a big challenge for textile manufacturers as gamut of fibre, yarn and fabric parameters are known to influence the thermo-physiological properties. The present study was undertaken with an aim to explore suitable combination of fibre and yarn variables for engineering polyester–cotton plated fabrics with good thermo-physiological properties. Categorical variables i.e. outer layer yarn type and inner layer fibre linear density were found to affect the thermal, moisture vapour and liquid moisture transfer properties of developed test samples. Fabrics knitted with carded yarn and polyester fibre of high linear density showed high thermal resistance and would feel warmer on initial skin contact owing to low thermal absorptivity. However, the air permeability and moisture vapour transmission rate increased with combination of combed cotton yarn in the outer and coarse polyester fibre in the inner layer. Combed yarn fabrics were superior in trans planar wicking compared to carded yarn fabrics which showed higher water absorbency and would be slow drying fabrics.

: This paper investigated the characteristics of the physical properties of woven fabrics according to the yarn structure and fibre property. It was found that wicking property of woven fabrics made of sheath/core hybrid yarn were better than those of siro spun and siro-fil hybrid yarns, which was caused by platform for transport of moisture vapor by filaments on the core part of sheath core hybrid yarns. In drying property, the fabric specimen woven by PP/Tencel sheath core hybrid yarns as a warp and Coolmax/Tencel spun yarn as a weft showed quick drying property, which was caused by the sheath core hybrid yarn structure as drainage of water moisture and coolmax fibre characteristics as quick dry material. Concerning to breathability and thermal conductivity as heat transport phenomena, it was observed that breathability of fabrics woven with hybrid yarns such as sheath core and siro-fil in the warp and hi-multi filaments in the weft showed the lowest water vapor resistance, which was explained as due to for air gap in the fibres of the spun yarns to restrict the wet heat transport from perspiration vapor. Thermal conductivities of the fabrics woven with PET/Tencel siro-fil yarns in the weft and hybrid yarns such as sheath core and siro-fil in the warp revealed the highest values, which was observed as due to higher thermal conductivity of PET than PP and more contact point between fibres in the sirofil and sheath core hybrid yarns.

Thermophysiological comfort in humans is sought universally but seldom achieved due to biological and physiological variances. Most people in developed parts of the world rely on central heating and cooling systems to achieve thermophysiological comfort which is highly energy-intensive, inefficient, and rarely satisfactory. A potential solution to this issue is a wearable personal thermal comfort system (PTCS) consisting of textile-based temperature and moisture sensors, that can sense the environment and physiology of the wearer, combined with thermal and moisture responsive actuators, and/or heating/cooling devices to provide an individualized thermal environment. Moving thermal regulation away from the built environment to the microclimate surrounding the human body with the use of textiles has the This article is protected by copyright. Such a system may employ thermal comfort models and leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning (ML) to understand individuals' comfort requirements in the current environment. Herein, the current state of textile-based active and passive thermophysiological comfort systems/technologies is summarized, including their environmental impact, major thermal comfort models, and factors influencing comfort (such as heat and moisture transfer). Also, active and passive textile-based devices (sensors, actuators, and flexible heating/cooling devices) that may be incorporated into a textile-based wearable PTCS are comprehensively discussed with an emphasis on their advantages, limitations, and future prospects.
