Palm oil has the important advantage of productivity compared with other vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil and soybean oil. However, the cold flow performance of palm oil methyl ester (PME) is poorer than other vegetable-oil-based biodiesel fuels. Previous research by the current authors has shown that ethanol blending into PME improves the cold flow performance and considerably reduces smoke emission. The reduced smoke may be expected to allow an expansion in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) limit and lead to reduced oxides of nitrogen (NO x ). This paper experimentally analyses the influence of EGR on smoke and NO x emissions with ethanol-blended PME.The results show that the combination of ethanol blending and EGR is effective in reducing NO x and smoke simultaneously without the thermal efficiency deteriorating. The smoke reduction can be attributed to an improved fuel-air mixing by an increased ignition delay owing to the low cetane number of ethanol and by a promoted fuel spray atomization caused by the low boiling point of ethanol. The increase in the oxygen content also leads to lower soot emission. The decrease in local equivalence ratio by ethanol blending was also suggested by the flame observation in which flame with high luminosity, high temperature, and high KL factor shrinks.

To elucidate the relationship between physicochemical properties, spray characteristics, and combustion performance, a series of experiments have been conducted in a constant volume vessel with injection of hydrous ethanol diesel emulsion and regular diesel. HE30 (emulsion with 30% volume fraction of 20% water-containing ethanol and 70% volume fraction of 0# diesel) is developed using Shah's technique and regular diesel is also employed for comparison. Firstly, the physicochemical properties of two kinds of fuels are investigated. Then, the non-evaporating and evaporating spray characteristics are examined through the high-speed shadowgraphs. Finally, spray combustion experiments under different ambient oxygen concentrations are carried out, and color-ratio pyrometry (CRP) is applied to measure the flame temperature and soot concentration (KL) distributions. The results indicate that the physicochemical properties, such as density, surface tension, kinematic viscosity, cetane number, and oxygen content, have significant impact on the spray mixture formation and combustion performance. HE30 exhibits lower soot emissions than that of regular diesel. Further analysis supports the standpoint that the hydrous ethanol diesel emulsion can suppress the soot and NO x simultaneously. Therefore, the hydrous ethanol diesel emulsion has great potential to be an alternative clean energy resource.

Aquestos conceptes han sigut estesos posteriorment al cas del doll Diesel. D'aquesta manera s'han estudiat en apartats successius els problemes de l'evaporació, l'autoencés i la flama de difussió Diesel mitjançant resultats experimentals obtesos a partir de tècniques convencionals iòptiques. Els raonaments recolzats sobre els conceptes de doll gasós han permés acompletar una descripció senzilla però rigurosa dels processos físics relevants per a l'evol·lució dels dolls de combustible. AbstractThe overall objective of this thesis is aimed at the construction of the necessary conceptual tools in order to analyse in a simple way the physical mechanisms that govern the fuel spray combustion process under boundary conditions found in a Diesel direct injection engine with a 2-litre per cylinder displacement that is highly supercharged. The work stems from the knowledge of the isothermal Diesel spray behaviour existing in the research group where it has been developed. In the first place, a review has been carried out in order to identify aspects of the Diesel injection-combustion process that have to be taken into account in order to develop this simple description.On the other hand, the work is based on the widely accepted assumption that this description can be based on the analysis of the Diesel spray from the point of view of gas jets. According to this, an in-depth study on the gas jet has been carried out, based on numerical simulations and theoretical deductions. The mixture fraction, the state relationships and the equivalent diameter concepts have been adapted in a simple way in order to describe the gaseous jets from the most general perspective, both under inert and reacting conditions. Such concepts have been extended to the Diesel spray. In this way, the evaporation, autoignition and difusion flame processes have been studied by means of experimental results obtained from both conventional and optical techniques. Arguments based on gas jet concepts have made it possible to compile a simple but rigourous description of the physical processes relevant to the evolution of fuel sprays.
