A study on the surgical treatment of ingrowing toe nail with nail excision with chemical matricectomy versus nail excision alone

Abstract: An in growing toenail develops when the proper fit of the nail plate in the lateral nail groove is altered. We selected 30 patients of ingrowing toe nail for the study. The patients were divided into two groups of 15 patients each. In group I patients, nail avulsion with chemical matrictectomy with 88%phenol was done. In group II only nail avulsion was done. In group I patients the surgical success rate was 98% and in group II, the surgical success rate was 86.6%. No patient complained about the cosmetic appea… Show more

“…All these have variable rates of recurrence (2,5,7,15). Surgical approaches have been reported as the best option for treating stage II and III ingrown toenails, because conservative approaches, which have positive results for stage I, result in greater rates of failure and recurrence (1,3,7,11,15,16).…”

“…Wearing tight shoes, cutting the nails too short or not cutting the nails straight, excess internal pressure caused by overcurvature of the nail plate, arthritis, skeletal abnormalities, diabetes, obesity, and nail changes in the elderly are among the many reasons for the presence of ingrown toenails (2,5,7,11,15).…”

“…Nail avulsion with phenol matricectomy is a common procedure as it is a highly effective treatment with low recurrence rates (14). Recurrence is de ned as a clinical reappearance following the procedure within the minimum 6-months follow-up period (7).…”

“…Surgical intervention is generally recommended for stage 2 and 3 diseases, and the optimal surgical therapy for ingrown toenail is still controversial. 1,3,12,[16][17][18][19] Th e main objective of this study was to compare the two methods of surgical matricectomy (SM) and matricectomy with electrocauterization (ME), particularly in terms of recurrence and postoperative pain.…”
