Purpose Knowledge is a fundamental source for sustainability and transfer as it plays a vital role in gaining and maintaining competitive advantage; thus it is imperative to investigate the factors that might impact knowledge transfer (KT). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the association between knowledge enablers (organizational culture (OC), information technology (IT) knowledge leadership (KL) and knowledge strategy (KS)) and KT in the Jordanian construction industry. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research approach was adopted, and structured questionnaire was sent to the employees in the construction industry. An aggregate of 250 surveys were distributed and out of them 195 were obtained, which represented a response rate of 78 percent. Findings The results of this paper showed that KS, OC, IT and KL has positive and significant impact on KT. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature by empirically testing the antecedents of KT in the Jordanian construction industry. To the best of authors’ knowledge, there are not many studies that incorporate these factors in single model, especially in Jordan.

Evaluating the Jordanian Experience in the Transition to a Knowledge Economy

In 2002, Jordan sought to shift towards a knowledge economy through the adoption of several policies supporting the transition towards a knowledge economy. The current study aims to evaluate the transition process as Jordan moves towards knowledge economy. Majority of the indicators presented in this study showed regression, despite some important steps taken by Jordan. The results showed a noticeable decline in the knowledge economy indicators in Jordan and also that Jordan is going through difficult economic conditions on account of minimal global support. The pace of the transition towards the knowledge economy has been greatly affected by deteriorated economic situations of Jordan. However, Jordan has been able to obtain some positive indicators with respect to human capital and creativity, and these endorse the significance of investing in human capital, reviewing the law and legal system, and education policies in Jordan. These results provide a guideline to Jordanian authorities so that they can take necessary measures to meaningfully invest in knowledge economy.

Purpose This paper aims to discuss the relationship between the digital economy and the model of internationalisation followed by companies resident in technology parks – institutions designed within the framework of regional and national innovation systems – to promote the country’s digital development. The authors selected Poland as the case study. It is one of the biggest European Union members that joined the EU after 2004. In the second decade of the 21st century, the Polish Government has oriented its economic strategy towards building a competitive digital economy. One of its fundamentals is to support the internationalisation of innovative firms. Design/methodology/approach The analysis interrogates the forms and determinants of internationalisation undertaken by tenants of technology parks. The study sample consisted of 300 of the total 1,584 enterprises resident at the 36 technology parks in Poland and was a stratified random sample, with particular strata classified by location at a specific park. The research applied an interview questionnaire designed to cover such issues as innovativeness, research and development, public aid and the support offered by technology parks. Findings The results show that around half of the investigated enterprises undertake international activities. The key factors determining the chances of a firm’s internationalisation in the digital economy are whether it conducts research and development projects and receives public aid support. Many tenants of technology parks in Poland enter foreign markets at an early stage of their development, using diverse forms of foreign expansion. The findings also show that the internationalisation of tenants of Polish technology parks usually occurs in six relatively independent modes (types). Originality/value This study contributes to a better understanding of the internationalisation patterns of firms facing digital development challenges. Technology parks have a crucial role in building a digital economy, facilitating a technological “leapfrog”. The final recommendations can guide the technology parks’ managers to adopt more relevant support services for the internationalisation of their tenants. It is a critical point for small- and mid-size young innovative enterprises.
