A study on the phylogeny and phylogeography of a marine cosmopolite diatom from the southern Black Sea

Abstract: A single-cell PCR method was applied to Pseudo-nitzschia pungens strains from the southern Black Sea. Based on the aligment set of the LSU D1-D3 region, a Bayesian molecular phylogeny analysis and a parsimony network analysis were used to investigate phylogenetic clades (Clades I-III) in P. pungens and to determine the ancestral clades. The parsimony network analysis also demonstrated that ancestral haplotypes belonged to Clade II, residing around the northeastern Pacific, while Clade I was distributed globall… Show more

“…Bacillariophyceae has the highest percentage in the waters, presumably because it can adapt to its environment (Yusanti, 2019). According to Baytut (2013) it is the class with the most numbers in the waters because it is cosmopolitan, has high adaptability, is resistant to pressure in an unfavourable environment, and has good reproductive power. Junaidi et al (2013) argue that Bacillariophyceae has the highest abundance due to environmental factors such as acidity, lighting, and food (nutrients).…”

“…From the list above, it is obvious that it is mostly the northern part of the Black Sea whose diatom communities have been investigated and in contrast, the Southern Turkish Coasts of the Black Sea only received attention very recently ( Baytut 2013 ). The latter authors investigated the discharge zone of the Kizilirmak River into the Black Sea and among the diatom species list many new records for Turkey were published.…”
