Producing valuable transportation fuels from shale oil has long been a goal among the industries concerned, but to meet modern environmental regulations a significant upgrading is required involving removing heteroatoms from it. The quantity of sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen in shale oil is one of the major obstacles to its wider use. Unlike petroleum whose upgrading consists mainly in desulfurization, for shale oils denitrification and deoxygenation are also important. This review compiles and summarizes the extensive research that has been performed on removing sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen from shale oil. By far the most widely investigated method has been hydrotreatment, but the results of work done with other methods are also presented.

The positive- and negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) coupled with Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) was employed to identify the chemical composition of heteroatomic compounds in four distillates of Fushun shale oil, and their catalytic cracking performance was investigated. There are nine classes of basic nitrogen compounds (BNCs) and eleven classes of non-basic heteroatomic compounds (NBHCs) in the different distillates. The dominant BNCs are mainly basic N1 class species. The dominant NBHCs are mainly acidic O2 and O1 class species in the 300–350 °C, 350–400 °C, and 400–450 °C distillates, while the neutral N1, N1O1 and N2 compounds become relatively abundant in the > 450 °C fraction. The basic N1 compounds and acidic O1 and O2 compounds are separated into different distillates by the degree of alkylation (different carbon number) but not by aromaticity (different double-bond equivalent values). The basic N1O1 and N2 class species and neutral N1 and N2 class species are separated into different distillates by the degrees of both alkylation and aromaticity. After the catalytic cracking of Fushun shale oil, the classes of BNCs in the liquid products remain unchanged, while the classes and relative abundances of NBHCs vary significantly.

Removal of alkaline nitride from lubricating oil by modified clays

In order to improve the removal efficiency of clays in oil refining, to explore the related factors and to clarify the removal mechanism of alkaline nitride, a series of modified clays was prepared to test removal of alkaline nitride from lubricating oil. After the addition of 1 wt.% FeCl3, the removal rate of alkaline nitride increased from 33.6% to 43.3%. Furthermore, the acidity and chlorine content did not exceed acceptable levels. The testing methods of N2 adsorption–desorption, particle-size distribution, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were conducted to verify the removal mechanism. The removal rate of alkaline nitride is mainly related to the density of Lewis acid sites. The Fourier-transform infrared spectra confirmed the existence of the complexation reaction. The basic nitrides were removed by chemical adsorption via Fe3+-complexation.
