A study on the concentration of heavy metals and histopathological changes in Persian jirds (Mammals; Rodentia), affected by mining activities in an iron ore mine in Iran

Mining is vital for human sustenance and a crucial sector in the state economy. However, its impacts on the environment and biodiversity cannot be underestimated. Which are potent to the attract government’s attention. Environment and wildlife are subject to the harmful impacts of mining and its related activities. In this study, districts, namely Mardan and Mohmand have been targeted with respect to mining impacts. The assessment was carried out on wildlife adversely affected by the mining sector. The fauna has been keenly observed to bring the calculated risks and threat perception of the regional wildlife. Total 9 species of mammals, 21 species of birds, were recorded in District Mardan. While in District Mohmand 2 species of mammals, 9 species of birds, and 4 species of reptiles were studied. The Study explored that mining primarily responsible for land degradation. Which lead to food and agriculture losses. Several other factors like blasting, pollution, hunting, deforestation, habitat loss was also observed. Deforestation surfaced one of the major causes for extinction of fauna in the said region. preemptive measures are needed to seize the man-made catastrophe.

Lead is the most common toxic metal in nature, and its adverse effects on various organs, including the kidneys. As a complicated process, kidney development is influenced by various environmental variables. Although lead toxicity can occur at any age, it is important in pregnant mothers and infants. Therefore, the present study investigated how the low dose of lead administration could affect kidney offspring in rat model. To this aim, a stereology technique was used. A randomized sampling was used to assign animals to five groups. The first one (i.e., Group 1 as the control) was provided with ordinary drinking water plus glacial acetic acid (0.5 ml/liter) 0 as a lead acetate solvent. Animals in Group 2 were administrated 0.2% of lead acetate in drinking water for 30 days prior mating. Rats in Group 3 received drinking water with 0.2% of lead for 21 days during pregnancy. Animals in Group 4 consumed 0.2% of lead acetate in their water for 21 days within their lactation. Group 5 was provided with 0.2 % lead acetate in water in their pre-pregnancy (30 days), pregnancy (21 days) and lactation (21 days) periods. The left kidney was removed from male offspring 60 days after birth. The volume of the kidney, cortex, medulla, proximal convoluted tubules (PCT) as well as distal convoluted tubules (DCT), and also the length of PCT and DCT, were analyzed by means of stereology. The findings revealed a reduction in the volume and length of the DCT as well as some pathological effects in experimental groups, compared to the control group. Due to the ameliorating effect of lead in perinatal period even in low doses on offspring kidneys, cautiousness is needed in this period.

The aims of this study were: i) to specify real risk elemetnt (RE) uptake by wild terresrrial mammals (A. sylvaticus and M. arvalis), ii) to describe RE distribution in critical organs such as liver and kidney, and iii) to determine potencial differences in RE toxicokinetics with regards to individual species or sex. Three groups of experimental animals were fed diets amended with soil and green biomass of hyperaccumulator Arabidopsis halleri with different RE levels. The contents of As, Cd, and Pb in the liver and kidneys of the animals reflected the element contents in the diet. Higher Cd and Pb accumulation ability was observed in A. sylvaticus compared to M. arvalis tissues, and an opposite pattern was recorded for As. Zn contents in tissues of both species remained unchanged, and total contents of Zn in the exposed animals even tended to decrease compared to the controls. Results of this study indicate a generally similar response of both species to elevated RE contents in the diet, confirming these wild rodents as suitable models for RE biomonitoring in ecosystems. However, our data highlights some distinction in As toxicokinetics in wood mice compared to that of field voles and a significantly higher accumulation of Pb and Cd in females. Therefore, factors of species and sex should not be overlooked if relevant data are to be obtained in environmental studies conducted on small terrestrial rodents.
