A Study on Meiofauna Community in the Subtidal Sediment outside of the Saemangeum Seadike in the West Coast of Korea

Abstract: ). Cluster analysis revealed that the study area was composed of three benthic meiofaunal communities. There were significant correlations between major meiofaunal groups and sediment composition and the concentrations of heavy metals. The abundance of harpacticoids are positively correlated with silt (0.559, p < 0.01) and clay (0.340, p < 0.01), and negatively correlated with sand (−0.548, p < 0.01). Harpacticoids also showed positive correlations with heavy metals. The community structure of meiofauna in the… Show more

“…The mean abundance of meiofauna, or meiofaunal density, averaged over the survey period was 614.4 Inds./10 cm 2 . This value falls within a smaller range compared to the meiofauna abundance reported in the intertidal zone of the West Sea, which ranged from 1,521 to 7,849 Inds./10 cm 2 , with a mean abundance of 4,161 Inds./10 cm 2 (Kim et al 1998). Similarly, in the intertidal zone of Daebudo, Korea, the range of meiofauna abundance was 30 to 1,382 Inds./10 cm 2 , with a mean abundance of 751 Inds./10 cm 2 (Min et al 2006).…”

“…Most of the time, they are reported together with other ecological parameters such as diversity indices and community structure (e.g., Alves et al 2013;Baguley et al 2015;Carman et al 2000;Elarbaoui et al 2015;Frontalini et al 2011;Huang et al 2005). Nevertheless, quite often, these are the only data provided in pollution studies (e.g., Bertocci et al 2019;Bohórquez et al 2013;Dal Zotto et al 2016;Gao and Liu 2018;Kim et al 2014;Montagna et al 2013;Morad et al 2017;Pereira et al 2017;Riera et al 2013;Sun et al 2014).…”
