Safe and effective drug therapy depends on patients being well informed about their medication. The proper use of drugs and patient education are vital for asthma management. Increasing patient’s knowl-edge about their asthma therapy is a necessary component of asthma management. This study was carried out to assess the patient counseling impact on quality of life (QOL) in asthma patients using SF 36questionnaire. In this study a total of hundred patients diagnosed with asthma were enrolled by considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Out of this, 50 (50%) patients were in intervention and 50 (50%) patients in the control group. As per our study it was found that the predominant risk factor for Asthma was fumes and smoking was found to be the major risk factor in males. After patient counseling intervention group showed improvement in QOL from the baseline to1st and 2nd follow-ups. But control group doesn’t show significant improvement in the QOL from the baseline to 1st and 2nd follow-ups. Physical activity and daily activity was also found to be increased during second follow-up in intervention group than in control group. Our study concluded that continuous education programs and counseling should be conducted for chronic diseases to emphasize and re-emphasize the importance of Quality of Life, to prevent recurrences, reduce progression of disease and ultimately minimize the hospitalization and there is a need of continuous pharmaceutical care services/ monitoring to improve the better quality of life.

Objectives Asthma is a major public health problem affecting a large number of individuals worldwide. The effectiveness of medications depends on adherence to the instructions of the prescriber. This study aimed to assess and compare the effectiveness of a reminder card system versus a mobile application to improve the medication adherence of asthma patients in a tertiary care hospital. Methods This prospective interventional study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital. The scores were obtained from the Morisky medication adherence scale. Results In the card group, comparison of the baseline and follow-up scores for medication adherence showed a mean difference of 3.44, p = 0.001. The application group showed a mean difference of 4.02, p = 0.001, which reflects a highly significant association. Comparison of the effectiveness of reminder cards and the mobile application showed a mean difference of 0.72, p = 0.088 (>0.05) at baseline, showing no significant difference in adherence status before intervention. After intervention there was a mean difference of 0.86 ( p = 0.001 < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in adherence status. Conclusion Provision of proper interventional tools can improve asthma medication adherence. In this study, the mobile application was found to be more effective than medication reminder cards.

BACKGROUNDObstructive pulmonary diseases include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Bronchial Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Small Airway Disease (Bronchiolitis). Among these, Bronchial Asthma and COPD are included in this study. The SGRQ questionnaire is used for measuring impaired health and perceived HRQoL in airways disease (COPD and Asthma). The objective of the present study was to assess the influence of clinical pharmacist counselling on health-related quality of life in a patient with asthma & COPD. MATERIALS AND METHODSThis prospective, interventional study was carried out in the general medicine department for a period of 6 months in RIMS Hospital, Kadapa. Patients were enrolled in the study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Study subjects were divided equally into two groups-patient counselling group (60) and without patient counselling group (60). All the study subjects were interviewed for the data regarding their demographics, disease type and state, social history, personal habits, etc. Health-related quality of life of all the study subjects was assessed at the baseline with SGRQ questionnaire and noted. RESULTSA total of 120 obstructive pulmonary disease patients were recruited under the inclusion criteria. Out of these, 48(40%) were from asthma and 72 (60%) were COPD and 86 (71.66%) were male and 34 (28.33%) were females. Among 120 patients smoking was present in 90 (75%), followed by alcoholism 4 (3.33%), climate changes 22 (18.33%), beetle nut chewing 4 (3.33%). 66 (55.00%) were labourers, 20 (16.66%) were farmers, 10 (8.33%) were housewives and 24 (20.0%) were from other professions. The average HRQoL score of the total study subjects (120) was found to be 27.29. CONCLUSIONThis study concluded that the clinical pharmacist involvement in Asthma and COPD disease management has a positive impact on creating awareness about the disease, which improves medication compliance along with Quality of Life.
