A Study on Hourglass-Worm Gearings Designed to Concentrate Surface Normals: Design for Worm Gearings With a Large Lead Angle

Abstract: For moderating the edge contact of gear tooth surfaces on load, a new concept has been proposed on designing worm gearing. As a first step of research, restricting a field of application of the designing concept, a few methods for generating tooth surface of hourglass worm gearing having a small lead angle have been devised. This paper tries to apply this designing concept to wider general use — an hourglass worm gearings with a large lead angle. First, the worm axis displacement relative to the… Show more

“…The failure of the reducer will not only cause the shutdown, but also waste lubricating oil and heavy metal materials. At present, there are few researches on worm reducer of coal machine equipment at home and abroad [1][2] , so it is urgent to solve the wear resistance of worm gear. This paper analyzes the problems existing in the use of domestic worm gear reducer, studies the influencing factors of worm materials, processing, assembly and lubrication, and puts forward effective solutions.…”

“…Other advances and refinements ensued. Gunbara et al [15] elicited the concept of concentrating surface normal and elastic deformation theory to design worm gears with a large lead angle so as to moderate the edge contact of gear tooth on load. Tseng and Tsay [16] proposed a type of cylindrical gear with curvilinear shaped teeth generated by face mill-cutter and mesh in point contact at the middle region of the gear tooth surfaces in order to reduce sensitivity to gear axial misalignment.…”

“…Tooth contact analysis presented by Litvin and Tsay [14] is the most representative and employed technique for simulating gearing analysis, such as meshing conditions and transmission error analysis. It has been applied to various types of gear [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][15][16][17][18][19]; besides meshing analysis, some studies have also addressed stress analysis [9,17], or applied optimizations in design processes [7].…”
