Analyzing Sustainability Literature in Maritime Studies with Text Mining

Since the world’s first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, sustainability has become a focal point of significant debate for industry, government, and international organizations. As a result, research on sustainability of maritime logistics is on the rise, yet fragmented in terms of conceptual development, empirical testing and validation, and theory building. The aim of this paper is therefore two-fold: the first aim is to present a literature review of key journal articles in the field of maritime studies published between 1993 and 2017 using a technique of topic modelling; and the second is to provide future research directions with respect to major topics, themes and co-authorship patterns. Mapping and consolidation of sustainability issues are achieved by conducting a generative probabilistic text-mining technique, called latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), for latent data discovery and relationships among text document data. Moreover, bibliometric analysis is conducted to visualize the landscape of sustainability research. Based on the results, a new intellectual structure of sustainability research is created, the underlying themes are identified, key trends and patterns are extracted and future research development trajectories are mapped for the field of maritime studies.

Introducción: El sector del transporte marítimo se ha caracterizado por un comportamiento cooperativo, a través de una colaboración e integración vertical y horizontal, en el cual las navieras se presentan como los principales actores en el escenario de concentración marítima. Optando por desarrollar una estrategia de alianzas que les permiten beneficiarse de las economías de escala y ampliar su cobertura geográfica mediante la planificación y coordinación conjunta de los buques a escala global; ofertando un mejor servicio. Objetivo: El objetivo de este artículo es dilucidar las posibles estrategias a seguir por las navieras para continuar en el camino del crecimiento y lograr una mayor estabilidad en un entorno caracterizado por la globalización, cambiante y en constante evolución. Metodología: se analizan las características internas y la situación externa (DAFO) a través de un análisis CAME, partiendo de la información obtenida de realizar un panel Delphi Resultados: Las fortalezas adquiridas por las navieras, que integran las diversas alianzas, les conduce a establecer una estrategia defensiva (Fortalezas – Amenazas) – ofensiva (primer cuadrante, Fortalezas – Oportunidades) para mantener su supremacía en el sector. Conclusiones: La cooperación e integración horizontal de las navieras ha dibujado un escenario de concentración, en el que las navieras más importantes (top 10) pertenecen a alguna de las alianzas establecidas. Fruto de esta concentración las navieras presentan un mayor poder de negociación que les permite mitigar las fluctuaciones presentes en el precio del petróleo y aprovechar las nuevas oportunidades que presenta el mercado como las nuevas tecnologías aplicadas al seguimiento y manipulación de la mercancía.

On 13 April 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) published an initial strategy on reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships. The ambitious vision of this strategy is to reduce the total annual GHG emissions from international shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. One of the solutions to achieve this vision is to operate vessels on alternative marine fuels that generate less or no GHG emissions, like liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, ethanol, biofuel, synthetic fuel, electricity (produced by battery), and so on. The challenge is that each alternative fuel has its own characteristic on various aspects. For instance, some alternative fuels may generate no GHG emission but can have higher risk than conventional marine fuel. Other alternative fuels may generate no GHG emission with relatively low risk, but the capital and/or operational expenditure can be significantly higher than other fuels. The main objective of this paper is to explore the properties of selected alternative marine fuels and to emphasize the necessity of integrated evaluation of them. It is concluded that the alternative marine fuels need to be comprehensively evaluated with respect to environmental impact, risk to human, and business value.
