Objective: To establish diagnostic features of same looking plants (C. gigantea and C. procera) and also to explore the diurnal influence on their Pharmacognosy values. Methodology: To meet the objectives, the characteristics of these plants were explored by macroscopic, microscopic (light microscopy), and also by physio-chemical parameters. The physiochemical analysis was performed with air dried leaves and flowers of C. gigantea and C. procera. The collected samples were used for the quantitative determination of ash value (water soluble, acid soluble and sulphate ash values), extractive values, loss on drying, swelling index, and foaming index through standard methods. The leaf and flower extracts (with different solvents) were subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening using the fluorescence test. Further, to explore the diurnal influence, the samples were plucked at different time intervals (morning, afternoon and evening) and fixed immediately for further processing. Results: It was observed that the macroscopic, microscopic and physiochemical characteristics analysed could serve as diagnostic features to distinguish these closely related species. Phytochemically, these plants are rich in constituents like carbohydrates, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, phenolic compounds and terpenoids. Moreover, physio-chemical parameters with methanolic extracts provided higher bioactive constituents than other solvents. Besides this, total ash values were found to be maximum i.e. PLA (15.33 ±0.050%) and GFE (14.15 ± 0.031%) than other acid insoluble and water-soluble values which were under 2-10%. Pertinently, the moisture content was found little higher in C. gigantea GLA (10.60± 0.200%) and GFA (11.06± 0.100) than in C. procera PLA (8.81± 0.598%) and PFA (9.92± 0.244, while a considerable amount of foaming content was present in both the species was less than 100. On the basis of observed pharmacognosy, C. procera was found more promising in drug prospective bioactive constituents than C. gigantea and thereby offers more contribution toward establishment of pharmacognostic profile of this medicinally effective plant species. C rataeva adansonii is a moderate-sized deciduous tree belonging to family Capparaceae (Ryan and Ray, 2004). It is commonly known as Varun, temple plant and sacred garlic pear. It grows well on sandy loam in arid areas. In Pakistan, it is found on the Sub-Himalayan track. Its leaves are trifoliate compound (Figure1; Hoang, 2013). The fruit is globose in shape having a 4-5cm diameter. The flowers are showy Abstract | Crataeva adansonii is a medicinal plant and many folklore uses of this plant are well known to us. Pharmacognostic studies like finding extractive values and nutritional values play a vital role in the determination of adulterated or exhausted drugs. It lays down parameters for authentication and standardization of drugs. The cytotoxic study helps in the evaluation of a drug for its toxicity, which is determined by the prevention of growth and replication. Such drugs can be used to treat cancer, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. During the present study ethanolic extracts of leaf and bark parts of C. adansonii were evaluated through cytotoxic activity. Brine shrimp larvae assay was conducted for this purpose. Extractive values of leaf and bark parts were estimated using n-hexane, chloroform, ethanol, methanol, water, and ether as a solvent. 10g of plant powder was dissolved in 200 ml solvent during various extract preparations Fluorescence study was conducted after treating the powder drug with different reagents including ethanol, methanol, acetic acid, n-hexane, HCl, nitric acid, carrageenan, glacial acetic acid, diethyl ether and picric acid and change in coloration was observed. Distinct fluorescence was exhibited by the drug under the normal daylight and UV-radiations of short wavelength (256nm) and long wavelength (365nm). Both the leaf and bark parts showed maximum extractive values in water (23% and 15% respectively) followed by methanol (15% and 6% respectively. The leaf part showed greater extractive values as compared to the bark. The cytotoxic study revealed that the ethanolic extract crude drugs of each part dose-dependently exhibited cytotoxic activity. At higher concentration (100-1000 µg/ml) the leaf and bark ethanolic extracts showed cytotoxicity and at lower concentration (10 µg/ml) very low cytotoxic effect was observed (Figure 4). The LC 50 values for crude leaf extract were found to be 5.34 and for that of stem bark extract, it was 7.44 ug/ml. This study manifests that the selected plant can be helpful in the preparation of novel pharmaceuticals. The pharmacognostic evaluation of this important medicinal drug will be supportive in the detection of adulteration and drug quality control.

Costus species is a significant restorative and decorative plant used to fix various illnesses. In India 6,000 plants are used for traditional and herbal medicine. The plant Costus spicatus commonly known as ‘Spiral ginger’ as ‘insulin plant’, a wonder drug down blood sugar level and hypoglycemic properties. The plant has been found to have numerous pharmacological exercises, for example, antibacterial, antifungal, anticholineesterase, cancer prevention agent, antihyperglycemic, calming, pain relieving, antipyretic, antidiuretic, antistress and estrogenic action. The rhizomes of Costus species are harsh, astringent, bitter, cooling, love potion, laxative, anthelminthic, depurative, febrifuge, expectorant, tonic, improve assimilation, and is an energizer herb that clears poisons. It additionally has against richness, anabolic properties. This audit plainly demonstrates the need to perform logical investigations with therapeutic vegetation featuring potential for Costus species because of its antidiabetic, pharmacological and cell reinforcement properties. The rhizome is credited with purgative and tonic properties. India is a botanical garden of the world for natural resources.
