A Study on Effect of Hybridisation of Supercapcitor With Battery for Blackstart

Abstract

Blackouts occur when a major part of the power sector gets shut down due to a fault. Its extremely crucial that this fault be rectified quickly and a Blackstart has to be initiated to get it back on power. The issue is the presence of a potential backup supply to reinitiate this major block of power system. Pumped hydro are a potential option but due to the unfavorable distance from the self starting generator, alternatives to this supply are constantly being researched for. Battery energy storage is a sought after way, however it has its own shortcomings. This paper has discussed the feasibility of hybridizing BESS with a super capacitor which are an emerging technology in the field of energy storages and are supposedly able to achieve better results than a battery alone system. A comparative study for both the systems were performed and the results were validated using a mathematic model.
