A Study on Community Based Aquaculture Promoted by KVK-Khordha, Odisha, India

Abstract: Since 1960s Community aquaculture gained its importance in India through the attempts of Research and Development agencies. Demonstration of fish culture practices in community ponds are challenged by its nature as water bodies are common property resources which requires substantial support from communities, local bodies and other agencies. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) -Khordha, the Farm Science Centre under Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) works on F… Show more

“…in adoption of composite fish culture. Similar constraints in adoption of scientific fish farming were reported by many researchers in different parts of India (Ananth et al, 2014;Mohanty et al, 2011;Abraham et al 2010) Factor analysis and formulation of strategies: Factor analysis was carried out to reduce the number of variables and found that among 32 variables few were more related to each other. To identify the respondent"s perception towards different statements so as to group them into specific factors, factor analysis was done using principal component analysis of SPSS (Table 2).…”

“…Community approaches in fish production has been reported by many authors (Radheyshyam, 1999(Radheyshyam, , 2009(Radheyshyam, , 2013Sinha, 1999;Saha, 2005, 2007;Ananth et al, 2014;Sahoo et al, 2016;De et al, 2016) but only a few cases of demonstrations of community-based aquaculture are on record (Lakshmanan et al, 1978;Sinha and Ranadhir, 1980;Sharma and Thakur, 1988;Radheyshyam and Tripathy, 1992;Radheyshyam, 1998Radheyshyam, , 2000Radheyshyam, , 2002. This paper presents the attempts of KVK in promoting adoption of community aquaculture through scientific management practices in different parts of the operational area of Khordha District in the state of Odisha, India.…”

“…Persistence of social issues and challenges in community leads to failure in community based aquaculture (De and Saha, 2005). Ananth et al (2014) and Sahoo et al (2016) reported the constraints faced in practicing aquaculture as high cost of feed, lack of financial support, poor retention of water in ponds, disease outbreak and issues related to lease period and value. Their study emphasised that institutions are vital for the welfare and updating of technical know-how to achieve higher fish production from community ponds.…”
