A Study on a Control Method with a Ventilation Requirement of a VAV System in Multi-Zone

Abstract: Abstract:The objective of this study was to propose a control method with a ventilation requirement of variable air volume (VAV) system in multi-zone. In order to control the VAV system inmulti-zone, it is essential to control the terminal unit installed in each zone. A VAV terminal unit with conventional control method using a fixed minimum air flow can cause indoor air quality (IAQ) issues depending on the variation in the number of occupants. This research proposes a control method with a ventilation requir… Show more

“…Disinfection methods as simple as continuous renewal of air through opening windows can be efficient, but this is not a reasonable option in many climates. Air conditioning (AC) and central heating systems provide continuous access to circulating air (100% room volume circulation every 10–20 min , with fresh air replacement every 40–60 min and higher rates in sensitive environments such as research laboratories and operating rooms), incorporating sophisticated methods to control air flow and ventilation in multizone spaces …”

“…Following the CO 2 based controls, Kim et al [22] proposed a VAV terminal unit control method that meets the ventilation requirement to control IAQ by controlling the air flow rate. The idea is to delay the outdoor air inlet time and to reduce the outdoor air flow rate, to control the CO 2 concentrations in the conditioned spaces.…”

“…In conventional systems, VAV boxes play a major role in both energy consumption and thermal comfort as they control the overall airflow required (but struggle with and are restricted to a 30% minimum supply to avoid airdrop) by the system as well as the airflow delivered to each zone. They have multiple components such as a controller, temperature sensor, actuator, damper, reheating coil and air flow sensor [22], VAV boxes are complex devices with embedded electronics which are expensive and prone to failures [15,19]. Hence, they are only applicable to large or medium construction projects [7].…”

“…Indicatively, the energy flow analysis with different technologies and systems' sizes and the evaluation of the achieved energy savings are investigated in [1], while different operation strategies for the involved economizer's dampers have been proposed in [2]. Alternative control methods of the variable air volume (VAV) systems operation, aiming at the minimisation of the energy consumption by exploiting the ventilation needs through the economizer constitutes another common research topic in the relevant literature [3,4]. A review article is available in [5], covering a wide range of topics related to the VAV systems: Most recent technologies on air flow control, simulation and modelling of the VAV systems, control strategies and optimization tools, faults detection and remedies.…”
