A Study of the Plasma Kinin-generating System in Children with the Minimal Lesion, Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome

Abstract: 705the present ones which suggest the existence of a photochemical reaction between D N A and bilirubin are somewhat disquieting, particularly when one considers that mutagens and chemical carcinogens derive their biologic activity from the ability to react with DNA. Our results suggest that phototherapy of neonates is a complex process which may generate a number of potentially dangerous genetic side effects. S U M M A R YThe widespread use of phototherapy in the treatment of neonatal jaundice is causing conc… Show more

“…The mean plasma PK level of the children in this study (1657 ± 318 U·L −1 ) is within the range of 990 (Andrew 1992) to 1660 U·L −1 (Kallen and Lee 1975) that has been described previously in children. PK levels were significantly and positively associated with fasting levels of TG, TC, and non-HDL-C but were not associated with glucose, HDL-C, or LDL-C.…”

“…Prekallikroh, which reciprocally activates factor XII, was deficient in one additional patient whose partial thromboplastin time showed a typical pattern of greater prolongation compared to normal when shorter preincubations (i. e. suboptimal contact activation) were used. Previous reports of low levels of prekallikrein presumably relate to the use of a less specific esterase assay (4,25) and they were not otherwise found in the present series by clotting activity nor in the patients of Saito et aI. (5) by both clotting activity and a specific radioimmunoassay.…”

“…Acquired functional deficiencies of Factor XII and PK were reported in the nephrotic syn drome. 47,50 Since kinins can increase vascular per meability, reduced titers of Factor XII and PK have been implicated in the pathogenesis of this disorder. The basis for these changes, however, is not fully understood.…”
