A study of the magnetic properties of a quasi-one-dimensional magnet β-TeVO4 in the frame of the J1–J2 model

Abstract: Magnetic properties of single crystal β-TeVO4 with a zigzag chain of magnetic centers (V4+ ions, S = 1/2) are analyzed in the framework of the J1–J2 model. The best agreement with experimental data is obtained for the J1–J2 model with parameters J1/kB = −38.33 K and J2/kB = 29.48 K (gb = 2.07, ga,c = 1.99). In contrast to the previously used model (a uniform antiferromagnetic spin chain system with J1/kB = 21.4 K (gb = 2.28, ga,c = 2.18)), this improved result allows one to consider the object under study as a… Show more

“…Here we focus on β-TeVO 4 , 18,19 which has been recently recognized as a very good realization of a spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic chain. [20][21][22][23] In this compound, the V 4+ (S = 1/2) magnetic ions are coupled by ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor J 1 ≈ −38 K and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor J 2 ≈ −J 1 exchange interactions mediated by oxygen and oxygen-tellurium-oxygen superexchange pathways, respectively (Fig. 1).…”

“…Here we study elementary excitations of the spin-stripe phase in the frustrated spin-1/2 chain compound β-TeVO 4 [17][18][19][20][21][22][23], which contains localized V 4+ (S = 1/2) magnetic moments [19,22]. This intriguing order involves two superimposed orthogonal incommensurate amplitude-modulated magnetic components with slightly different modulation periods (Fig.…”

“…Recently, Saúl and Radtke [16] performed a microscopic analysis of isotropic exchange couplings and concluded that β-TeVO 4 is a good realization of the J 1 − J 2 chain model with ferromagnetic (FM) J 1 and antiferromagnetic (AFM) J 2 . Subsequently, magnetic susceptibility of β-TeVO 4 was re-analyzed in the framework of the J 1 − J 2 model [17]. Gnezdilov et al [18] reported non-monotonic evolution of phonon frequencies and speculated on possible structural changes around 150 K and even on a change in the orbital state of V 4+ at low temperatures.…”
