A study of the low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in the X-ray light curves of the black hole candidate XTE J1859+226

Abstract: Abstract. We present the results of an extensive timing analysis of the 1999 outburst of the soft X-ray transient and black hole candidate XTE J1859+226 as observed with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. Three main different types of low frequency (1−9 Hz) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were observed and classified, strengthening the general picture that is emerging for the variability properties of black hole X-ray binaires. Rapid transitions between different power spectral shapes were observed and their … Show more

“…In this context, the smooth continuous transition between the NBOs and the FBOs appears to be very different from the fast, unresolved transitions observed between type-B and type-A QPOs in BHCs (Nespoli et al 2003;Casella et al 2004), i.e. the equivalent of NBOs and FBOs in this analogy.…”

“…The state is defined by changes in the PDS. The identifying feature is the presence of the so-called type-B QPO, which has been shown not to be an evolution of the one observed in the HIMS (type-C QPO; see Belloni et al 2005;Casella et al 2004Casella et al , 2005Motta et al 2011Motta et al , 2012. Notice that the SIMS in the HRD is characterised by a drop in total fractional rms (the ellipse in Fig.…”

“…These sporadically appearing QPOs in PDS were observed until 2010 May 14. The observed QPOs in hard and hard-intermediate states ) are of the "C" type and in soft-intermediate state are of the "B" type (van der Klis 2004;Casella et al 2005).…”
