A Study of the Influence of Heavy Water upon the Activity and upon the Stability of Pancreatic Amylase

Abstract: The rearrangement product was shown to be the benzoate of benzoylcarbinol (IV) by a mixed melting point with an authentic sample of that carbinol prepared by the method of Rather and Reid.12 (12) Rather and Reid, This Journal, 41, 75 (1919). SummaryDibenzoylcarbinol has been prepared and its chemical behavior described. The carbinol, which does not exist as an ene-diol, is very readily oxidized. It is cleaved by alkali and rearranges on heating to furnish the benzoate of benzoylcarbinol.

“…LEWIS (1934) found that seed germination is impossible in pure D 2 0 and 50 % inhibited in 50 % D 2 0. PACSU (1934) found that the alcoholic fermentation of d-glucose is retarded in about 100 % D 2 0, while CALDWELL, DOEBELING and MANIAN (1936) found a higher inactivation of pancreatic amylase in about 100 % heavy water. LEWIS (1934) concluded on the ground of the experiments known to him, that D 2 0 is not very toxic, but only slows down the activities of the cell more or less in direct proportion to the % D on the total H present.…”
