A Study of the Epidemiology of Anaplasma Marginale Infections of Cattle in Southern Queensland: Clinical Disease and the Prevalence of Complement Fixing Antibodies

Abstract: A total of 386 clinical outbreaks of anaplasmosis were confirmed In Queensland south of the 22nd parallel over the period 1967 to 1976. Seventy-eight per cent of these outbreaks occurred during autumn and winter and only 6.8% involved cattie less than 1 year of age compared with 54.8% for cattle more than 3 years old. Dairy breeds were involved in 48.1% of 258 outbreaks compared with 51.9% for beef breeds. 60s faurus beef breeds were involved in 90.7% of 118 outbreaks compared with 9.3% for Bos indicus crossbr… Show more

“…Older animals were more often infected than young ones. A previous study in Southern Queensland, also concluded that animals older than one year are more susceptible to the infection than younger animals [51]. On the contrary, a study in Pakistan concluded that animal susceptibility is not influenced by the age.…”

“…Esta situação é pertinente, pois a anaplasmose bovina é endêmica na maioria das regiões de clima tropical, sub-tropical e temperado do globo (Rogers et al 1978, Payne & Scott 1982. A não observação de diferença estatística das prevalências entre os municí-pios, demonstrou que a infecção por A. marginale é alta e homogênea na mesorregião Norte Fluminense.…”

“…A. marginale can be transmitted by ticks, as well as by biting flies in tropical and subtropical areas (Wanduragala & Ristic 1993). Among the species of ticks mentioned as vectors of anaplasmosis, Boophilus microplus has been considered the main transmitter of this rickettsia (Rogers et al 1978, Hermans et al 1994. Nevertheless, the transovarian transmission of A. marginale in B. microplus is still controversial, since several studies could not demonstrate it, and its occurrence appears to be at low frequency in nature (Potgieter 1979, Ribeiro et al 1996.…”
