“…The cooling of the climate is indicated by the disappearance of Quercus, Ulmus, Tilia cordata, Taxus, Hedera and Viscum (Winter and Dobracka 2006;Winter et al 2008). A decrease in the water level occurs at the beginning of this period, indicated by a high abundance of the benthic Alona quadrangularis and an appearance of Oxyurella tenuicaudis, which indicates the existence of mud-vegetation substrates (Duigan and Kovach 1991) and a decrease in openwater species. Then a change to colder and wetter climates is suggested by a decrease in the values of Pinus sylvestris t. and an increase in the values of Calluna vulgaris, Ericaceae, Cyperaceae and Poaceae (Winter and Dobracka 2006;Winter et al 2008).…”

“…The high number of occurrences of these Cladocera in the NT-lakes suggests that they should, however, not be regarded as cold stenothermal but as cold tolerant (Meijering, 1983). Alona affinis and Chydorus sphaericus, for example, are known to occur over a wide range of environmental conditions (e.g., Duigan & Kovach, 1991;Duigan, 1992;Korhola, 1999). Planktonic Cladocera were dominated by Bosminidae (Bosmina coregoni and B. longispina), which occurred in 'warm' and/or 'nutrient-rich' NT-lakes.…”

“…They occupy a key position in food chains converting organic matter used for its own growth and also making it available to higher trophic levels. They can also be indicators of the trophic state of the water bodies, because they quickly respond to the changes in environmental variables (Duigan & Kovach, 1991). They can also be used in the reconstruction of the past history of the aquatic ecosystem, considering that they have many fossil remains well preserved in the sediment (Whiteside, 1970).…”
