A study of speed ratio affecting the performance of a contra-rotating axial compressor

Abstract: The performance and detailed flow structure of a counter-rotating compressor under different rotating speed and typical working condition were experimentally and numerically investigated. Numerical results preliminarily showed that the total pressure ratio performance agreed well with experimental data, when the calculated peak efficiency was a little bigger than the experimental one. With optimized speed ratio, the peak isentropic efficiency can be increased with minor reduction of the total pressure ratio an… Show more

“…Nouri [ 6 ] carried out an experimental study on the design of the contra-rotating fan, revealed that speed ratio had an important impact on the overall performance. Chen [ 7 ] investigated the effects of speed ratio and rotation speed of rotor upstream over downstream on the performance of a contra-rotating compressor. The aerodynamic performance and noise of a contra-rotating fan under different rotation speed and axial spacing were numerically investigated by Luan [ 8 , 9 ].…”

“…A counter rotating strategy is used to increase pressure ratio and decrease configuration's size since stator vane become unnecessary. Because of this, the counter rotating technique has been studied in aviation primarily for the compression of air (Chen et al, 2008;Young, 1951). In this study, instead of simulating the whole multi-stage compressor, CFD numerical methods are used to predict one single counter rotating stage's performance.…”

“…However, in the actual work of CRF, the rear-stage rotor motor burnt out by accident [15]. Experimental studies showed that variable speed matching can improve the work stability [16]. Mistry and Pradeep [17,18], through experiments and numerical simulations, reported a study of speed ratio on the performance of a contrarotating fan stage.…”
