“…It is considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness (Muftuoglu, 1983;Singh et al, 1983;Atkinson et al, 1986a,b;Yaralı et al, 2008). CAI is conducted with reference to the original testing recommendation by the French CERCHAR institute (Cerchar, 1986).…”

“…The CAI is determined as the abrasion of a metal pin after scratching over the freshly-broken surface of a rock. The pin is made of a certain steel quality (200 kg/mm 2 tensile strength or Rockwell Hardness 54-56 or Vickers Hardness 610 ± 5) and is terminated by a 90°cone angle, sharpened on a high precision lathe and applied to the surface of a rock specimen for approximately 1 s under a static load of 68.646 N to scratch a 10 mm long groove (Suana and Peters, 1982;Yaralı et al, 2008). This procedure was repeated several times in various directions using a fresh pin for each repetition.…”

“…Research performed for coal measures rocks confirmed correlation, i.e. linear relationship between abrasiveness and average quartz grain size [28].…”

“…Porosity and cementing material of rock have adverse effect on CAI value. Higher the porosity and amount of cementing material lower is the CAI values [13,15,16]. A correlation between CAI and LCPC (Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees) values has been proposed based on the experimental work on Olivine and Tholeiitic Basalt as well as data collected from literature available [17].…”
