A study of open strings ending on giant gravitons, spin chains and integrability

Abstract: We systematically study the spectrum of open strings attached to half BPS giant gravitons in the N = 4 SYM AdS/CFT setup. We find that some null trajectories along the giant graviton are actually null geodesics of AdS 5 × S 5 , so that we can study the problem in a plane wave limit setup. We also find the description of these states at weak 't Hooft coupling in the dual CFT. We show how the dual description is given by an open spin chain with variable number of sites. We analyze this system in detail and find … Show more

“…This idea was first applied in [47] to reproduce the spectrum of small fluctuations of giant gravitons [48]. The description was then further developed in [49][50][51][52][53]. The articles [51][52][53] in particular JHEP03(2016)156 developed this description to the point where interesting dynamical questions 1 could be asked and answered.…”

The open string words are then inserted into a sea of Zs which make up the giant graviton brane(s).…”

“…But one can define also other kinds of open strings, in particular ones that extend between D-branes. In the context of N = 4 SYM, these have been studied in [10][11][12]. D-branes wrapping some cycles in the gravity dual, with some angular momentum, are usually giant gravitons, i.e.…”

“…The corresponding spin chains with boundaries in N = 4 SYM have been studied in [58,59,60,61]. It was found there that these spin chains usually do not preserve the length of the spin chain [59] and that their spectrum of excitations is continuous in the large N limit.…”
