A study of low power laser on the regenerative process of Girardia tigrina (Girard,1850) (Turbellaria; Tricladida; Dugesiidae)

Abstract: The mechanism of regeneration does not start to restore the wound until its corresponding epimorphic phase. A bioestimulation of tissues and cells by laser radiation depends on the wavelength, on the dose, and on the intensity of the light. The goal of this work was to verify the effect of the low power laser at 660 nm on the regenerative process of Girardia tigrina. The specimens were maintained in the laboratory under a temperature ranging from 19° up to 24 °C for 21 days. The planarians were anesthetized by… Show more

“…The last two species L. friderici and S. brevipinna were the most 13 C depleted fishes and they have similar feeding habits. Both fishes are iliophagous and feed on detritus, benthic filamentous algae and invertebrates associated to bottom substrates [52], [53].…”

“…As regards OM healing, LLLT is known to increase fibroblast proliferation , favoring the collagen synthesis and angiogenesis ; reducing COX‐2, TNF‐α and pro‐inflammatory cytokines IL‐6 and IL‐1β ; promoting differentiation of anti‐inflammatory cytokines IL‐2, IL‐4, IL‐8 and IL‐10 ; and acting in the NFkB pathway . In addition to analgesia, LLLT can enhance peripheral endogenous opioid production and decrease serum prostaglandin E2 .…”

“…This species is notable for presenting steroids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, tannins and saponins, which are chemical compounds that have pharmacological properties (Hnatyszyn et al, 2007). Moreover, several studies have shown that the use of low-power laser has beneficial therapeutic results on the cicatrization in different tissues (Lopes et al, 2009;Moraes et al, 2012). The main medical applications of LLLT are in reducing pain and inflammation, augmenting tissue repair and promoting regeneration of different tissues and nerves, and in preventing tissue damage in situations where it is likely to occur (Byrnes et al, 2004).…”
