A study of idiopathic generalised epilepsy in an Irish population

Abstract: More women than men were diagnosed with generalised epilepsy. Tonic clonic seizures were the most common seizure type reported. EGTCSA was the most frequent syndrome seen. Gender differences were evident for JAE and JME as previously reported and for EGTCSA, which was not reported to date, and reached statistical significance for EGTCA and JME.

“…Our results showed that more females complained of more than one seizure type and the same results were shown by Mullins and his colleagues [27]; however, they reported multi-seizure (> 2) type to be equal in both sexes, an observation that we recommend to be further studied. They also found that idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) is more common in females; in our cohort, this was true for JME, IGTC, and TLE, but juvenile absence epilepsy (JAE) was more common in males (p = 0.02).…”

“…In this large cohort of patients, we observed that IGE‐GTCS is the most common seizure type among patients with IGE syndromes. This is consistent with that in previous studies . In our study, 86% of the patients reported experiencing GTCSs at some time during their disease; this rate was 73% in an Irish study .…”

“…This is consistent with that in previous studies . In our study, 86% of the patients reported experiencing GTCSs at some time during their disease; this rate was 73% in an Irish study . In the current study, we showed that the chance of experiencing GTCSs is a function of the duration of disease in patients with IGEs; therefore, the observed difference between our study and that Irish study could be due to the different durations of disease between the study populations.…”

“…The diagnosis of IGE is based on strict clinical guidelines and electroencephalogram (EEG) as proposed by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). IGE is more common in the first or second decade of life; although, it may be present in any ages (3,4). The patients suffer from epilepsy, might return to normal life situation after surgical operations on the seizure foci resistant against drug treatment.…”
