A Study of Humidified Gas Turbines for Short-Term Realization in Midsized Power Generation—Part II: Intercooled Cycle Analysis and Final Economic Evaluation

Abstract: Humidified gas turbine (HGT) cycles are a group of advanced gas turbine cycles that use water–air mixtures as the working media. In this article, three known HGT configurations are examined in the context of short-term realization for small to mid-sized power generation: the steam injected gas turbine, the full-flow evaporative gas turbine, and the part-flow evaporative gas turbine. The heat recovery characteristics and performance potential of these three cycles are assessed, with and without intercooling, an… Show more

“…While the STIG cycle, and variations such as the Cheng cycle [8], have received considerable attention historically, more recent developments have focused on variations of the EGT. In particular, there has been a significant interest in the humid air turbine (HAT) cycle, and variations, which use a humidifier rather than direct water injection [9][10][11]. However, since the cogeneration of steam is a desired output in this study, only the STIG cycle will be considered.…”

“…The current work is in effect an extension of the work performed by Bartlett and Westermark [15,16], by presenting a new concept for a high pressure wet cycle, TopCycle. TopCycle represents a strong and promising option in the category of modern small and medium sized power plants and offers highly efficient power and heat generation at plant sizes, which cannot be feasibly covered with CC.…”

“…Bartlett and Westermark investigated thermodynamic and economic potentials of steam injected cycle, full flow evaporative cycle, and the part‐flow evaporative gas turbine cycle with and without intercooling. They appreciated the nature of each cycle's heat recovery system with their composite curves and analyzed the response of each cycles to changes in pressure and the firing temperature.…”
