PurposeFood and beverage (F&B) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must diversify their markets and obtain predictable sources of revenues to withstand difficult and volatile periods such as the post-pandemic geopolitical scenario, recently burdened by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. On the other hand, another strand of the literature suggests that public procurement could be considered a great source of income, enabling solid contracts, revenues and cash-flow stability. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the role of public procurement, the adoption of e-commerce platforms and their interactions in affecting the exporting performances of SMEs operating in the F&B sector.Design/methodology/approachThe study retrieves data from 2,186 Italian F&B manufacturing SMEs relying on Margò by Cribis database. Therefore, it conducts a structured equational model (SEM) to test the developed hypotheses empirically.FindingsThe findings reveal that digital selling platforms positively affect exports, whereas public procurement negatively affects F&B SMEs exports. Nonetheless, findings underline that the interaction between public procurement and the adoption of digital selling platforms dampens public procurement's negative effects on exports.Originality/valueThis study brings an original contribution to the F&B literature by conducting empirical research on an extensive sample of firms from one of the most influential countries in the F&B vertical, Italy, with officially registered data. More importantly, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this study pioneers the investigation of the relationship between public procurement and e-commerce platforms in affecting F&B SMEs' export performances.

El eje central de la mayoría de las herramientas digitales es establecer una interacción entre individuos para generar nuevas ideas o conocimiento. Pero otros elementos claves para los ingenieros y la industria es que proporciona tecnologías, productos, servicios, infraestructura y soluciones digitales para el desarrollo de la digitalización empresarial y la transformación social del recurso humano. Esto significa que el nivel de innovación e investigación de la industria digital es importante en el efecto de innovación de la digitalización de las empresas y la mejora continua del recurso humano y, sus capacidades como elemento transformador del entorno académico e industrial. Entonces, es muy importante conocer los diferentes entornos que usan las herramientas digitales para roles en investigación, innovación, industria y academia. Actualmente son una necesidad en la formación de los ingenieros, pero la utilidad de estas va a depender de si son fáciles de usar e intuitivo. Sin embargo, antes que nada, es necesario conocer las estructura y usos que se les están dando a las herramientas digitales.

PurposeThe study examines the impact of emotional intelligence on service innovation capabilities. Furthermore, it explored the mediating role of diversity climate and the moderating role of innovation culture.Design/methodology/approachAn online questionnaire helped to collect data from 257 public sector employees in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The proposed hypotheses were analysed using structural equation modelling.FindingsBuilding on the ability model, the study found that employees' emotional intelligence has a positive impact on diversity climate; that diversity climate does not mediate the relationship between emotional intelligence and service innovation capabilities and that innovation culture has a moderating effect between diversity climate and service innovation capabilities.Originality/valueThe paper clarifies the emotional intelligence of the workforce and its ability to influence innovation culture and diversity climate in public organisations, ultimately benefiting service innovation capability research. As such, the study contributes to the literature by proposing and analysing some antecedents of service innovation capabilities in the context of public organisations. The study also offers policymakers information on what prevents innovation, which they can use to raise the bar on service quality requirements in the public sector.
