“…These re sults show' that the oral load of both TCA and DCA affect promotively the occurrence and proliferation of cholan giocarcinoma. Yamamoto [19] reported that bile ductule proliferation w'as an important factor in the occurrence of cholangiocarcinoma in rats treated with diethylnitrosamine, and Kinami et al [20] performed a histological ex amination in cases of hepatolithiasis associated with cholangiocarcinoma and emphasized the relationship be tween hyperplasia in the bile duct epithelium and car cinogenesis. In our examination performed previously in hamsters [ 15], histological changes in the bile duct and its epithelium were observed, and in this study the histologi cal examination also demonstrated proliferation of bile ductules and papillary hyperplasia in the bile duct, reveal ing their high occurrence rates in the 2 groups treated with bile acids.…”

“…Bacteria were detected in the group with IBDO throughout the whole course. These results suggest that IBDO has an influence as promoter on the occurrence of DIPN-induced cholangiocarinoma. It has been experienced that cholangiocarcinoma occurs in the liver during the follow-up of patients with diseases accompanying morphological abnor mality in the intra-or extrahepatic bile duct, including intrahepatic stone disease [1][2][3][4]. Incomplete or com plete obstruction and dilatation of the bile duct and cholangitis, in addition to bile stasis, are commonly observed in these diseases.…”

“…All pathological studies on CC in Japan have shown frequent association with hepatolithiasis, with the figures varying from 5.7 to 17.5%. 2,5–7 Do these figures suggest an aetiological relationship? The incidence of hepatolithiasis in the general population is not known in either country, but if all autopsies were considered to represent indirectly a general population, albeit inaccurately, these figures are significant: hepatolithiasis was found in 20 of 8406 autopsies (0.24%) in 1913 8 and in 0.12% of 23 275 autopsies in 1975 in Japan.…”

“… 27 Earlier pathological studies based on one to a few cases of hepatolithiasis‐associated CC had similarly demonstrated atypical hyperplasia of the ductal epithelium. 6,28,29 …”
