A Study of Ground Movements in Brussels (Belgium) Monitored by Persistent Scatterer Interferometry over a 25-Year Period

Abstract: Abstract:The time series of Synthetic Aperture Radar data acquired by four satellite missions (including ERS, Envisat, TerraSAR-X and Sentinel 1) were processed using Persistent Scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques. The processed datasets provide a nearly continuous coverage from 1992 to 2017 over the Brussels Region (Belgium) and give evidence of ongoing, slow ground deformations. The results highlight an area of uplift located in the heart of the city, with a cumulative groun… Show more

“…In this study, the PSI analyses were performed in the software SARPROZ, which can do all necessary steps in a PSI analysis and produce time series of deformation [24]. The SARPROZ software has been successfully tested for different applications including urban subsidence studies [25][26][27][28]. SARPROZ can handle data from different sensors, including Sentinel-1.…”

“…With an analogous objective, the paper by Declercq et al [11] provides a 25-year long (1992-2017) study of ground instability for the city of Brussels (Belgium) through combination of C-and X-band satellite SAR data from the ERS-1/2, ENVISAT, TerraSAR-X, and Sentinel-1 missions. A total of 300 scenes are processed with Persistent Scatterers (PS) methods to extract deformation time series and detect the evolution of ground deformation.…”

“…The region of interest (ROI) covers a large area containing the towns of Merchtem, Aalst, Opwijk and Steenhuffel. This research has two main goals: i) to map the land subsidence bowl (already described in [3]) during three decades by adding Sentinel1A data, ii) to process TerraSAR-X Stripmap SAR images to map precisely the most recent evolution of the subsidence bowl.…”
