A study of floods in the Brahmaputra basin in India

Abstract: During the summer monsoon months June-September, the Brahmaputra River experiences severe floods that occur year after year causing death and destruction in the Assam Valley and neighbouring Bangladesh. During the period 1987-1998, flood data of 21 gauge/discharge sites on the main Brahmaputra River and its 12 major tributaries have been studied with a view to discovering which sites and tributaries experience frequent floods in different monsoon months and how high flood magnitudes are. It is hoped that this … Show more

“…Nagaon and Morigaon are the most densely populated districts of the basin. A total of 57 flood events were reported in KRB by the Kampur and Dharamtul gauge/discharge stations during 1987-1998(Dhar and Nandargi 2000. The Great Assam Earthquake of 1950 had caused the bed levels uplifted, thereby large sediments were deposited on the river banks leading to overtopping of banks (Minakshi and Goswami 2014).…”

“…The rainfall over the southern slopes of the Meghalaya Hills is thus very important in the flood processes noted in Bangladesh (Hofer and Messerli 2006;Murata et al 2008). Dhar and Nandargi (2000) also include the northeast as being among the flood-prone areas in which the majority of floods in India occur.…”

“…The physical and socioeconomic impacts of disaster are complex, depending upon the vulnerability of the place of occurrence as well as the mitigation strategies [2]. The vulnerability of the people to the extreme weather events seems to be increasing every year in terms of change in intensity and frequency [3,4], that adversely affecting human beings and their interaction with different urban ecosystems [5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Therefore, the studies related to climatic change and extreme weather events have received increased attention in the last few years.…”
