Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) are promising approaches for generating power from medium or low temperature heat sources. In this regard, ORCs can be used to indirectly produce power from solar energy. Due to intermittent nature of solar energy, storage unit should be coupled with solar ORCs to improve the output power and operating hours. In this article, studies on solar ORCs integrated with various types of storage units were reviewed; the main findings of such studies were extracted and provided. Based on the findings, several factors such as the temperature and pressure at the inlet of the turbine, as well as the operating condition affect the performance of solar ORCs with thermal storage unit just like the conventional ORCs. In addition, the optimum size of the storage unit in the solar ORCs was found to depend on the operating condition. From the financial perspective, it can be noted that the storage unit affects the corresponding indicators. Moreover, the improvement rate in the ORCs by applying storage units could be affected by the configuration of the system.

In the present paper, the economic feasibility of small-scale solar organic Rankine cycle power applications which are assisted with auxiliary gas heaters is investigated. The system is analyzed using three different capacities of ORC system with R-245fa (35, 65, and 110 kWe) in combination with solar water heating system (SWHS) using three models. Flat plate, compound parabolic and evacuated tube solar collectors were used to generate heat with overall heat transfer coefficient (F R U L) of 4.35, 1.57, and 2.23 W/m 2. K respectively. System Advisor Model (SAM) is used to simulate the solar water heater system and optimize the tilt angle, collector area, volume of storage tank and capacity of auxiliary heater under the climatic conditions of Abu Dhabi, New Delhi, Larnaca, Madrid and Munich. The simulation results revealed that the evacuated tube and the compound parabolic collectors performed better than the flat plate collectors. The economic analysis showed that Solar ORC Power Plant is economically and technically feasible with all types of the thermal collectors in Famagusta/Larnaca, Munich and Madrid where the electricity tariff is higher than other cities. Levelized cost of energy (LCOE) is calculated using mathematical model and it ranges between 0.07 and 0.2 USD/kWh based on the plant capacity and type of thermal collectors. Moreover, the profit increase as the plant capacity increase where SIR is 1.05, 1.71, and 2.10 for 35, 65, and 110 kW plant capacity SORC with CPC. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to investigate the effect of operating hours, electricity tariff, ORC unit cost and ORC unit type on the feasibility of the system. According to the results, the electricity tariff and operating hours are the most important parameters because they have a large effect and Play important role on the economic feasibility of the system.

Batteries play an important role in stand-alone two-stage converter (boost converter and inverter) based solar photovoltaic (SPV) systems. Here, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation of a stand-alone solar system is carried out with the usage of a battery by absorbing excess solar power. Nevertheless, instability (abnormal rise of DC link voltage) can appear during the real-time operation of the battery-based solar energy conversion system due to the action of the MPPT controller, if a sudden battery breakdown happens. In this respect, a failure detection-less solution is proposed. The suggested strategy restricts operation of the MPPT and helps to settle the output power of the SPV at non-maximum level on its P-V curve as per necessity. Thus, voltage instability at DC bus (link between boost converter and three-phase voltage source inverter [VSI]) is prevented. Here, the bus voltage can be kept within a predefined upper and lower limit. The limits are decided accordingly to the SPV characteristics. Simultaneously, the required load powers (both active and reactive portions) are supported by the VSI. In the proposed strategy, the output of the MPPT algorithm is restricted by adopting a saturation limit for a certain duty ratio. The critical task is to find the value of the saturation limit, as the limit supports all-time operations (it allows desired performances under all maximum power situations and avoids instability under all non-maximum operating conditions). The procedure of determining the limit is thoroughly described. The conventional approach uses a failure detection-based separate control algorithm. At the same time, the proposed concept does not require a separate algorithm. The suggested concept is validated via a MATLAB-SIMULINK-based simulation study and down-scaled experimental set up.
