Abstract. Biodiesel wastewater generally contains high levels of oils, soaps and glycerol residues. This needs wastewater treatment. In this study, the biodiesel wastewater treatment was tested (industrial wastewater (EFID) and laboratory wastewater (EFLB) from biodiesel) by performing flocculation and dual-flocculation with renewable polymers. Tannin and cationic hemicellulose (CH) were used as cationic flocculant, and cellulose acetate sulfate (CAS) was used as an anionic flocculant. Polyacrylamide (PAM) was used as a reference anionic flocculant for result efficiencies analysis obtained with CAS (renewable source flocculant). The treatment efficacy in wastewater was evaluated by: turbidity removal, sludge volume formed, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS). The obtained sludge was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The dual-flocculation application condition of the 25% proportion of tannin (T) and 75% proportion of cationic hemicelluloses (i.e., T25/CH75) showed EFLB turbidity removal of 89.1% and 89.5% for CAS and PAM additions respectively, and for EFID of 67% and 41% for CAS and PAM additions respectively. The dual-flocculation performance suggested that the polyelectrolytes obtained from renewable sources can be used for treating biodiesel wastewater.

This paper discusses the behaviour of iron-rich sludge, a problematic waste product of potable water treatment, minewater/groundwater management and hydrometallurgical processing. The work confirmed the highly hydrous and largely amorphous nature of the sludge and the significant differences that occur in reactivity (rate of acid leaching) and density (densification) depending variously upon the mode of sludge formation, pre-conditioning and storage. A structural study using a combination of FT-IR / ATR, XRD and TG/DTA correlated decreases in reactivity with ageing (i.e., with increases in particle size and/or degree of crystallinity) and increases in density with expulsion of weakly bonded water. The work underpinned studies on recycling of water treatment sludge with ion exchange resins and accelerated densification during sludge management.

a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f oAlthough the synthetic organic polymers have been widely applied as flocculant aids to improve solid-liquid separation efficiency, it is not very clear how the charge type and molecular weight of the polymers influence the characteristics of flocs. In this paper, floc characteristics, such as floc size, density, structure, strength and reversibility were investigated in details in terms of their response to the polyacrylamide (PAM) with different charge types and molecular weights. Laser light scattering, image analysis and settling technology were employed simultaneously. The results showed that floc size induced by anionic PAM with medium molecular weight (A130) and ultra high molecular weight (A115) was 419 µm and 438 µm respectively, correspondingly, floc size induced by cationic PAM with medium molecular weight (C448) and very high molecular weight (C498) was 731 µm and 796 µm. Meanwhile, floc fractal dimension was inversely proportional to polymer molecular weight and the values were between 1.91 and 2.40. In addition, floc density was affected by molecular weight of anionic PAM more dramatically than that of cationic PAM. For a given floc size, the density increased with molecular weight. Furthermore, flocs formed by cationic PAM showed much greater shear-resistant ability and reversibility than anionic PAM. Nevertheless, the poor reversibility of the flocs formed by high molecular weight was also observed. An explanation for the resultant floc characteristics was offered in terms of flocculation mechanisms.
