The number of visually impaired people and elderly people groups are significant, but the current lighting system used in buildings, which is based on the current standard, cannot provide the necessary lighting comfort for them. The lighting system should provide the correct illuminance for every activity and even pattern of light. This research presents the work in progress in developing the novel adaptive lighting system tailored for visually impaired people, which becomes the solution to the problem. The behavioral adaptation aspects and the experience and memory principle are taken into account in the system design. It also makes use of the latest independent adjustable artificial light (LED) technology, to get an even pattern of lighting, while still considering efficient energy usage. The proposed system structure uses a wireless sensor network (WSN), big data processing, and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sub-system, which can predict and adaptively regulate the illumination level based on the occupant’s needs and routines. The initial simulation of the lighting model is presented in this paper. The simulation uses five scenarios in different seasons and daylight. The simulation shows satisfactory results for illuminance values 200, 250, 300, 500, and 750 lux, needed by the occupants.

Outdoor mobility of Visually Impaired People (VIPs) has always been challenging due to the dynamically varying scenes and environmental states. Variety of systems have been introduced to assist VIPs' mobility that include sensor mounted canes and use of machine intelligence. However, these systems are not reliable when used to navigate the VIPs in dynamically changing environments. The associated challenges are the robust sensing and avoiding diverse types of obstacles, dynamically modelling the changing environmental states (e.g. moving objects, road-works), and effective communication to interpret the environmental states and hazards. In this paper, we propose an intelligent wearable auditory display framework that will process real-time video and multi-sensor data streams to: a) identify the type of obstacles, b) recognize the surrounding scene/objects and corresponding attributes (e.g. geometry, size, shape, distance from user), c) automatically generate the descriptive information about the recognized obstacle/objects and attributes, d) produce accurate, precise and reliable spatial information and corresponding instructions in audiovisual form to assist and navigate VIPs safely with or without the assistance of traditional means.

Young professionals and millennials who live alone or are living in small groups and seek practicality, trigger the trend of smaller, modular and micro houses and apartments which are faster and cheaper to build. Multifunctional or flexible room is one of the important parts of the home. This particular room needs well-designed lighting for comfort. It should give an adequate illuminance for every activity and even pattern of light. This paper presents the factors for developing the smart adaptive lighting system which can provide lighting comfort for the occupants. The simulation is being done in 5 scenarios in the LJMU BRE 2010 house model using DIALux Software with the dimmable type of LED independent luminaire. The proposed system structure uses a wireless sensor network (WSN) and big data processing as the main components. The design employs an Artificial Intelligence (AI) subsystem which has the capability to predict and adaptively regulate the illumination level based on the occupant needs or routine. The simulation shows that this system is able to give even lighting pattern for luminance values 200, 250, 300, 500, and 750 lux which are needed by the occupants. With the possibility of user-defined lighting values, this system can be developed to accommodate the needs of special groups of occupants such as the elder or disabled groups.
