A study of charm hadron production in ${\rm Z} \rightarrow c\bar{c}$ and ${\rm Z} \rightarrow b\bar{b}$ decays at LEP

Abstract: Measurements of the production of the weakly decaying charmed hadrons: D 0 , D + , D + s and + c in both Z 0 ! c c and Z 0 ! b b events are reported. By summing the partial contributions from each of these states we measure the partial width for Z 0 decays into a c c pair as:

“…5.6(c) and (f), i.e., λ 2-jet − λ 3-jet and R 2-jet − R 3-jet , we find λ to be slightly smaller in 3-jet than in 2-jet events, while R is slightly bigger in 3-jet than in 2-jet events. Similar behavior has been previously observed by OPAL [75] and DELPHI [23].…”

“…With a simple Gaussian parametrization and using pairs of unlike-charged particles as a reference sample, OPAL [75] found an R value approximately 6-10% larger for three-jet events than for two-jet events, for all multiplicities. Considering the large uncertainties due to the use of parametrization and reference sample, we do not consider this a significant difference to our result.…”

“…Calorimeter clusters having energy greater than 0.1 GeV are used to determine the event thrust [35] axis and to classify events as two-or three-jet events, which are analyzed separately, since differences in the space-time structure (and hence in the BEC parameters) could be expected, and indeed have been observed [26,36].…”

“…For example, in a recent OPAL analysis of τ polarization [53], a large sample of 25000 τ → e events was studied. By fitting the e momentum distribution as described above, an upper bound on B(τ → lf ) at the 2 × 10 −3 level could be derived.…”
