A study of artificial fibre bag technique for determining the dig estibility of feeds in the rumen

Abstract: SUMMARYThe artificial fibre bag technique was evaluated for assessing the proportions of dietary D. M. and N which disappear in the rumen. The most important factor determining the variability in disappearance from bags incubated together was the sample size in relation to bag size. For incubation of 5 g air dry feed, a bag size of 17 ✗ 9 cm was found to be adequate. There were also variations in substrate disappearance between animals and between days of incubation. It was estimated that three sheep and the m… Show more

“…Previous authors have studied either phosphorus availability or phosphorus use by rumen microbes using radio labelled phosphorus [36], in vitro devices and in vivo trials [3,37]. The aim of the present work was to measure the rumen phosphorus release from feedstuffs commonly used in ruminant diets by the nylon bag technique [17,19] as previously done on forages [5,6,26].…”

“…The rumen hgestion kinetics of the alfalfa hay was evaluated using the dacron bag technique (Mehrez and Orskov, 1977). Alfalfa hay (only leaves) had 95% DM, 25% crude protein (CP) and 20% NDF and was chopped in a meat mincer with lcm diameter cribs.…”

“…The quantitative assessment of the breakdown process is key to carry out an effective and sustainable nutrition of the productive ruminants (Givens et al, 2000;Monteny, 2000, quoted by Van Duinkerken et al, 2005. The in situ technique developed by Mehrez and Ørskov (1977) is widely used to study the protein breakdown of the feeds in the rumen, nevertheless, several criticisms have weakened the merits that were originally assigned to this methodology, forcing several corrections needed to adjust the data according to their sources of error (Mathis et al, 2001;Cone et al, 2004). Research has also been developed on the proteins degradability with commercial enzymes (Pichard and Van Soest, 1977;Assoumani et al, 1992), where proteases from Streptomyces griseus fungus have been used, reaching satisfactory levels of proteins breakdown.…”
