“…Through this strategy, carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II) was identified as an antigen that elicited serum antibody response to dendritic cell therapy in the patient. To our knowledge, this is the first report showing the presence of serum anti-CA-II antibody in cancer patients although it has been reported that the antibody is prevalent in some autoimmune diseases (10). In this study, we also did the immunohistochemistry of CA-II in various cancer specimens and found that CA-II was expressed in tumor vessel endothelium.…”

“…Autoantibodies against the carbonic anhydrase isoenzyme II (anti-CAII) have been detected in the serum of patients with several autoimmune conditions, such as SLE, SS, SSc, dermatomyositis [91], RA [92], PBC [93], autoimmune cholangiitis [94] and Graves thyroiditis [95]. In patients with SS the prevalence of anti-carbonic anhydrase antibodies has been reported in the range of 12.5e20.8% [91,92]. Intradermal immunization with human carbonic anhydrase II was shown to induce an experimental autoimmune sialadenitis in mouse models, indicating a possible pathogenetic role of anti-CAII antibodies in SS [96].…”

“…In addition, in vivo studies have recently shown that induction of anti-CAII antibodies in a mouse model of SS causes renal tubular acidosis [99]. Ono et al described a patient with SS associated with RA and a high titer of anti-CAII antibody, who had calcinosis and renal tubular acidosis, mimicking congenital carbonic anhydrase II deficiency [91]. Furthermore, Takemoto et al studied 46 patients with pSS and concluded that those with distal renal tubular acidosis (n ¼ 13) had higher levels of anti-CAII antibody than did those without renal tubular acidosis (n ¼ 19) [99].…”

“…In Sjogren's syndrome several autoantibodies, including SS-A, SS-B and a-fodorin, have been identified as disease-related antibodies (1). Amongthem the antibody to carbonic anhydrase II was occasionally detectable in the sera of patients with this disease (7,15,16), although it was also found in the sera of patients with other collagen diseases: systemic lupus erythematosus, progressive systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis (17). Originally, carbonic anhydrase II was reported to be an enzyme of an interspecies cross-reactive antigen (15), and its histological localization was shownto be in the ducts of a variety of exocrine glands, including salivary, lacrimal and pancreatic glands, the biliary tract and uriniferous distal tubles ( 16).…”
