A study of allergen-specific IgE antibodies in Indian patients of atopic dermatitis

Abstract: Antibodies against apples and hazelnuts were the more commonly seen specific antibodies in children. Incidence of positivity was much higher in children when compared to earlier studies. Identification of food allergens can be an important factor in the diagnosis of AD in children in India. Positivity to inhalant allergens in the older age groups was lower in this study. The allergen profile with regard to inhalants in Indian patients was similar to that of earlier studies.

“…Differently from other cohort studies that point to egg white (Kulig et al 1999;Nickel et al 1997), CM was the main culprit in this study, and the reason for that may lie in the fact that low-aged children and mild cases prevailed in our sample. These peculiarities probably also corroborated to the lower sensitization rate found in this study when it is compared with results reported in the literature (Kulig et al 1998;Nickel et al 1997;Somani 2008;Wahn et al 2008).…”

“…In this study, a 1.001-fold increase in the odds ratio of sensitization to foods in each added unit of IgE was observed. However, it was not possible to establish a correlation between the (Laske and Niggemann 2004;Somani 2008). The age group with 36 months of age or less showed the highest concentration of sIgE level, and over half of these infants presented this feature during their first year of life (52.6 %), indicating that sensitization really occurs in the beginning of life according to the data from the studies early treatment of the atopic child-ETAC (1998) and multicentre allergy study-MAS (Kulig et al 1998).…”

“…This study also noted an age dependence in the pattern of sensitizations. Sixty-five percent of the children under the age of 10 were positive to one or more food allergens; sensitivity to food allergens was more common in those below 10, while that to aeroallergens was more common in the older age children [12].…”

“…5 Allergic rhinitis along with bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis and allergic conjunctivitis is included in atopic group of diseases. 7 Allergic rhinitis/conjunctivitis and allergic asthma are characterized by a T(H) 2-dominated immune response associated with increased serum IgE levels in response to inhaled allergens. Because IgE is a key player in the induction and maintenance of allergic inflammation, it represents a prime target for therapeutic intervention.…”
