A structural study on ethylenediamine- and poly(amidoamine)-functionalized graphene oxide: simultaneous reduction, functionalization, and formation of 3D structure

Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were simultaneously modified and reduced with ethylenediamine (EDA). Then, EDAtreated GO (RGO-NH2) was exposed to iterative alkylation and amidation reactions to synthesize poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM)-grafted GO nanosheets. Reactions were continued until 4 th generation of PAMAM were grafted onto GO layers (RGO-4.0GD). FT-IR results approved the synthesis of different structures, while TGA curves showed that reactions occurred non-ideal and PAMAM was not grafted as expected. Also, X… Show more

“…After modification with APTES (Figures 3-b and c), the small sharp peak at 697 cm -1 appears due to methyl rock vibrations [29,30]. The peaks in the ranges of 1475-1490 cm -1 and 1575-1585 cm -1 correspond to C-H and NH2 absorptions respectively [31]. Also, peaks in the ranges of 2865-2875 cm -1 and 2930-2935 cm -1 are respectively ascribed to -CH2 and C-H stretching vibrations [32].…”

“…Hydrazine monohydrate was used as a reduction agent for OH groups of the PAA and formation of NH 2 groups (Scheme ). As shown by FT‐IR spectroscopy in Figure , PAA‐based microparticles show characteristic peaks of PAA and MBA as follow: 2850 and 2930 cm −1 attributed to CH 2 stretching vibrations, 1720 cm −1 ascribed to carbonyl groups of PAA and 1640 cm −1 originated from carbonyl groups of MBA . After treatment with hydrazine monohydrate, absorption peak at 1086 cm −1 is attributed to the NN stretching movements, small peak at 1316 cm −1 arises from CN stretching, strong peak at 1624 cm −1 stems from amidation of CO groups of PAA and peaks at 3180 and 3320 cm −1 are attributed to primary amines of attached hydrazine molecules .…”

“…By the oxidation of G, interlayer spacing is increased and also the stacking order of layers is decreased. These are mainly result from the reduced size of sp 2 -bonded domains by the oxidation process and presence of oxygen-containing groups at the surface of layers [34,58]. GO, FGO, and GX show a broader diffraction pattern in comparison with the pristine graphite.…”
