A Structural Model of Parent Involvement With Demographic and Academic Variables

Abstract: Parental involvement is well documented as a significant contributor to the self-efficacy and academic achievement of students. A structural equation model of parent involvement with family socioeconomic status, student gender, parents' aspirations for their children, mathematics efficacy, and mathematics achievement was tested to examine whether parent involvement in the 10th grade remains relevant to achievement. A sample of data pertaining to 8,673 10th graders from the Educational Longitudinal Study was an… Show more

“…Although, as discussed earlier, Epstein (2011) suggests family involvement is influenced by processes and complex relationships which makes it more complicated than simply attending events. While family involvement has different influences and interpretations, it has been found to significantly impact children's development within various domains including academic, social, and behavioral outcomes (Choi, Chang, Kim, & Reio, 2015;Deckner, Adamson, & Bakeman, 2006;Domina 2005;El Nokali, Bachman, & Votruba-Drzal, 2010; Fernández-Alonso, Álvarez-Díaz, Woitschach, Suárez-Álvarez, & Cuesta 2017; Garbacz, McDowall, Schaughency, Sheridan, & Welch, 2015;Tichovolsky, Arnold, & Baker, 2013;Weigel, Martin, & Bennett, 2006).…”

“…Previous studies have found that parental involvement which includes parental autonomy support as one indicator is closed to learning (Cheung and Pomerantz, 2011; Choi et al, 2015). Parental involvement means parents involve in children’s schooling to contribute to their academic achievement (Cheung and Pomerantz, 2011; Baker, 2015).…”

“…Methodologically, research on parental involvement in children's learning typically exploits statistical analyses of either extant data or targeted surveys to examine the influence of particular parental behaviours on American children's achievement. Such studies have examined parental involvement from the perspective of the child (Choi, Chang, Kim & Reio, 2015), the parent (Vukovic, Roberts & Green Wright, 2013), the teacher (Sheldon & Epstein, 2005) and combinations of these (Cai, 2003). This variation has led some researchers to construe parental involvement as a messy construct (Pomerantz et al, 2007;Ross, 2016), not least because researchers have tailored definitions to fit their particular studies (Pomerantz et al, 2007), with research becoming so topdown that what parents and teachers do becomes invisible (Lawson, 2003).…”
