A Streamlined, High-Volume Particle Impactor for Trace Chemical Analysis

Abstract: The design and characterization of a streamlined, high-volume particle impactor intended for use with trace chemical analysis is presented. The impactor has a single round jet and is designed to operate at a flow rate of 1000 L/min. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used as a tool to optimize the aerodynamic performance of the impactor by iteratively redesigning the geometry and curvature of the internal walls. By eliminating recirculation zones within the flowfield of the impactor and using flowfield str… Show more

“…For example, this particle jet was used to help characterize the performance of a prototype shoe sampling system by delivering a quantified number of particles onto the surface of a shoe, 28 and was also used to help evaluate the particle collection characteristics of a prototype particle impactor for explosives sampling. 29 …”

“…Some other impactors have been designed to operate at high flow rates that exceed hundreds of liters per minute (Misra C. et al, 2002) and even thousands of liters per minute (Fulghum M.R. et al, 2012;Staymates M. et al, 2013) to collect more mass of PM 10 , PM 2.5 , PM 1 or PM 0.1 .…”

“…To alleviate this problem a new perpendicular inlet 23 was successfully developed to allow small particles (<1 mm) to be sampled to the exclusion of cloud particles (>1 mm) with no discernible artifact response. A streamlined, high-volume particle impactor 24 employed a single round jet designed to operate at a ow rate of 1000 L min À1 . The novelty of this study was not necessarily the design of this new impactor but the combination of computational uid dynamic tools with rapid prototyping using 3D printer technology.…”
