The shift towards digitalisation has been empowering growth in the construction industry, especially in the past decade. Construction stakeholders are offered myriad benefits by embracing digital advancements to achieve efficiency. However, the exploitation of digital opportunities is bounded by the need for a practitioner skillset that aligns with the digital era, a requirement that has been described as difficult to meet and justified by the low degree of digital literacy among construction employees. This paper reports findings from interviews with 19 leaders and decision makers in the construction sector to reveal the indicators that can predict construction employees’ digital literacy. Such an approach offers a comprehensive exploration of the likelihood of employees’ digital literacy through socially oriented characteristics. Overall, 19 individual characteristics emerged from the thematic analysis and highlight the critical connection between social behaviour and digital literacy. The findings of this paper are timely and important for those businesses assessing their employees’ willingness and maturity with regard to technological change through social and behavioural information. The qualitative approach led to the development of a conceptual framework that can explain the dynamics needed to assess employees’ digital literacy in construction organisations. This study, therefore, reveals the effectiveness of predicting employees’ readiness to shine in the digital era by shedding light on their digital literacy through examinations of individual characteristics in a construction workplace. This paper is among the first to encourage research efforts that take into account the importance of studying social and psychological complexities, which are subject areas that are limited in recent construction literature. As such, it is of value to employers wishing to embed greater digitalisation in their firms, as well as researchers in this domain and policymakers looking to encourage greater digital transformations.

Digital innovations can improve the consumer experience by facilitating more personalized and convenient interactions, enhancing user interfaces, or introducing new features and functions. The potential innovation value rests in the capacity to attract and retain customers, boost customer satisfaction, and cultivate brand loyalty. The objective of this study is to formulate a digital startup strategy based on the potential value of innovation in six areas: strategy and planning, marketing, technological process, quality and environment, logistics, and human resources. This can help startups and stakeholders make informed decisions on how to best allocate resources and efforts to maximize their chances of success. Using a potential value map derived from a questionnaire survey, which held in February 2022, the innovation potential was analyzed. From an interview with the manager, the data served as the basis for developing the strategic plan using the TRIZ technique. Aspects of strategy and planning (2.33) and human resources (2.00) have the lowest score among the six aspects and classified as “B” level. Using the process of the TRIZ method, additional analysis of these two aspects yielded several solutions applicable to the formulation of the company’s strategy. Training regarding the strategic planning of the company is one of the strategies and planning-related solutions. Our study shows that TRIZ model is helpful to handle the identification and find solution of contradictions in problem situation of digital start-up company.

The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the current state of Industry 4.0 (IR 4.0) with regard to construction in Australia and to identify the key factors that are driving and hindering its adoption. A literature review and desktop review were conducted to extract mainstream topics, followed by a two-folded workshop designed with a multidisciplinary team of academics, as well as representatives of mainstream firms and peak bodies from the construction value chain. Our study has highlighted the importance of considering both technological and human-related factors in the adoption of IR 4.0 to address barriers that have been traditionally overlooked, and work towards a more successful and holistic implementation of this transformative paradigm. By considering the social aspects of construction, prioritizing data-driven approaches with a focus on privacy and ethics, and emphasizing integration, these facilitators contribute to the effective implementation and success of IR 4.0 in the construction industry. The findings of this study have significant implications for the construction industry in Australia. Addressing the barriers to digital construction adoption and embracing IR 4.0 technologies can help the industry to improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability. Additionally, investing in education and training can help to build the necessary skills and capabilities needed to drive the industry forward in the digital age.
