A stochastic network design problem for hazardous waste management

Abstract: Hazardous waste management is of paramount importance due to the potential threats posed to the environment and local residents. The design of a hazardous waste management system involves several important decisions, i.e., the determination of the locations and sizes of treatment, recycling and disposal facilities, and organizing the transportation of hazardous waste among different facilities. In this paper, we proposed a novel stochastic bi-objective mixed integer linear program (MILP) to support these decis… Show more

“…With given probability distributions for the stochastic parameters, an infinite number of decision trees can be generated. However, we focus on the model's behavior but not on the scenario generation procedures [56], so the output of the simulation model should be stable with different scenario trees [74], as shown in equation (10). erefore, a Monte Carlo simulation method is used, which runs the AnyLogic model for |S| times in order to test the stability of the analytical results:…”

“…Their mode had considered fuzzy customer satisfaction and was resolved by using Lingo software. Yu et al ( 2020 ) proposed a novel stochastic bi-objective mixed integer linear program to reduce the population exposure to risk and maintain a high cost efficiency of the transportation and treatment of hazardous waste. Homayouni and Pishvaee ( 2020 ) designed a collection and disposal network of hospital wastes under uncertain condition, and the total cost of transportation and operations costs, and the total risk of transportation and operations were minimized.…”

“…[19][20][21] In developing countries, landfills are the most common method of waste disposal and unfortunately uses the scarce arable land resources for landfill thereby contributing to land degradation because of the non-degradable toxic buried wastes which emits dangerous gases that impact the environment negatively. 17,22,23 Recycling of clinical wastes can reduce landfill and environmental pollutions, because their addition as fillers in building and construction materials provide opportunity for their reuse in large amount.…”
