A step towards the optimization of the indoor luminous environment by genetic algorithms

Abstract: Buildings are heavily responsible for energy consumption and CO 2 emissions. Increasing their energy efficiency is in the direction of the EU strategies; and this is consistent with EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD 2010/31/EU), 2010. In this view the design and management of daylight and artificial light can play a fundamental role. In this paper, a method to optimize indoor lighting design from energy efficiency, economic and environmental viewpoints is presented. The optimization was develo… Show more

“…The calculations of the parameters characterizing the quality of luminous environment in interiors were made using the DIALux 4.13 software. It is a tool verified [32] and used in research on interior lighting [30,31,33,34]. The Statistica package [35] was applied to calculate the lighting power and to analyze the results.…”

“…Achieving a comfortable visual environment calls for various requirements. However, in relation to the light shelves, we limited the requirements to three conditions, i.e., maintaining adequate indoor illumination, balancing indoor illumination, and solving the glare problem [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. The details are as follows.…”

“…Daylight is an essential resource for building users and it has a psycho-physiological role, impacting health and wellbeing [1,2]. It is also an important resource in terms of energy and economic efficiency, since the availability of daylight allows to lower the use of artificial lighting, and consequently of energy [3].…”
